Front axle leaks

I have a 98 K1500 Z71 Ext Cab and the front axle has started leaking at the half shafts on driver and pass sides. Also my passenger cv boot cut so I'm replacing that. Right now I'm planning on replacing pass half shaft, axle seals, and axle bearings. I haven't bought anything yet let me know if you think something else is needed or isn't needed.

I've never tore down the front axle yet so any insight on typical problems I'll encounter would be good, or any tricks on getting this job done relatively easy.

Thanks for any comments or suggestions

Sliding Rear Window Latch

So when I bought my pickup it had a sliding rear window. I'm cool with that, right? :smokin:

Problem is I noticed the previous owner had broke the latch for the sliding rear window and to keep people from stealing things out of the truck, they just wrapped wire around the two halves.

So, I went to the dealership to get a new latch, the guy looked it up and said it was discontinued and he didn't have any. He did give me the part number and told me to check on the internet.

I did so. I found a company that had some on hand so I ordered one for 20 bucks shipped.

Today it came and I went to put it on. No luck, its not the right one. So, I think someone replaced the glass in the back of my pickup.:screwy:

So, now I sit here with a latch that doesnt fit, and a sliding rear window thats still being held shut with a piece of wire.

Has anoyone ever deal with this before? I took the old latch off and looked for any sort of writing on it, but I didn't find anything. However I did find a stamp on the lower corner of the sliding rear window that said GRL saftemp. I do not know if that is the brand name or what.

Here are some pictures taken from my camer phone, so don't yell at me for the bad quality....

Anyone what to buy the latch? $15.00 shipped OBO!

Where can I get a new latch that will fit?

98 K-1500 noise...

Okay, so I posted this over in the Tahoe area, but since it is essentially a K-1500 anyway, let me ask here for some help.... I apologize for the post here, but this one is frustrating me greatly.

I've been chasing a noise for two months on my 98 tahoe. It sounds like a weird road noise, it comes in around 20-25 mph, like a light scrapping, and continues with speed, equallizing, around 50 mph, where you can still hear it. when it gets past 30-35 mph, it becomes more of a whooshing noise, like a flit flit at wheel rotation. I had this thing on and off the jack, rotated all the tires and wheels out, replaced the rear U joint, rear wheel bearings, (which the LR was making a slight noise) front wheel bearings, (and the left front a second time) and (unrelated) upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, front rotors, brakes, etc...

what I have noticed recently, in the last few days, is that you can sorta coast arount 35-40 mph, turning the wheel slightly left, maybe enough to make it drift to the left, draws the noise loud, and turning it slightly right, silences the noise. this only started to develop, and is making me think that I possibly got an issue with the left front driveshaft.

Anyone experience this? I am getting ready to swap out the LF halfshaft, and I guess I just want to fix this thing. Also, does anyone have a good timken/national number for the front steering knuckle seal? I cannot find a listing for this part anywhere, and if I am going to replace the axle, I want to put a new seal in as well.

Guys,

I don't remember, is there a headlight warning buzzer on the C1500 1991 trucks? I thought mine use to have one, but I don't hear the buzzer anymore.

Does anyone know if there was one and if so, why mine no longer works and now to fix? Is it in the fuse panel?

Thank you,

Have a K1500 v6 4.3L... what kind of MPG can I expect?

I'd like to hear from others who own this truck... what kind of gas mileage are you getting? Is it hwy/cty/mix?

I don't think my truck has been getting what it could. I just adjusted the timing (which was off) and fixed a possible issue with the MAP sensor (somebody didn't put the vacuum hose back on all the way, which could have easily caused a leak, which I know would affect the air/fuel mixture and thus the gas mileage).

I'm just curious what others with this truck (not necessarily the same year, but the same motor and automatic tranny) are getting in terms of fuel economy.

Mine is a 1991 K1500 v6 4.3L with an automatic transmission.

THANKS!!

k1500 350 V-8 shudders at idle

Hi all,

Truck starts no problem, idles for a couple seconds but begins to shudder at a stop while in gear. Acceleration from stop is fine after above 800 rpm's and all other speeds except around 60 mph when you want to accelerate she shudders a little then too.

I have a 98 K1500 with a 5.7 liter V-8 140K miles; new plugs, air and fuel filters, new serpentine belt, & battery.

I have treated the last 6 tanks of gas with fuel injector cleaner of various brands with no resolution to this problem.

Where might I find these o2 sensors and air mass sensors to clean and or replace?

Does this ignition system even have a distribitor cap? I don't think so.

any help would be appreciated ;-)

1994 K1500 4.3, 5 speed manual popping out of gear

Hello all, I'm the latest new guy. How yall doin?

My son has a 1994 K1500 4x4, with a 4.3 and a 5 speed manual. I thought he was imagining things until it happened to me. Three times now. The truck will pop out of 1st gear violently, but not every time. It seems like if you are taking off from a dead stop on a slight incline, it will do it almost every time. It also wants to pop out of 3rd gear. Sometimes when shifting from 2nd to 3rd, even with the clutch pedal pushed all the way down, it seems like it wants to grind going into 3rd, and then pops out.

I have researched several different forums and this one looked like the best one to join. I also searched this forum but couldn't find any past issues like this, so sorry if this is a duplicate.

From looking at the older posts, it looks like I am definitely going to have to figure out which 5 speed this truck has. Could be a Getrag or a Borg Warner or ??? Also varies in regards to the right oil/tranny fluid? I would have though 80/90 weight gear lube, but I saw some posts indicating it might take some form of Dexron or sythetic or syncronizing (sp?) fluid/oil? Could it be the same stuff an AWD Astro van takes in it's transfer case?

Anyhow, thanks for reading this post. C ya, Joe

PS: The truck only has 91,000 on it. We have owned it for a little over a year. Bought it from original owner and he provided extensive maint records, including a new clutch and some sort of transmission work (something about having 2nd gear replaced??). I told my son to get the 5 speed because I thought manual trannys were more reliable than automatics, but maybe not with this model???

Hi all.

I am looking for information on TSBs for GM.
TSB number (766504) reprograming to correct false codes.
Recall number (97024) incorrect egr valve used.

Has anyone had these completed?

Thanks

U-Joint or Rear End Noise?

1997 Chevy K1500 350 4x4 Extended Cab short box 100,000 miles.

While driving in town 30mph or less with the window down you can hear a low whoomp whoomp whoomp. Then while driving higher speeds of 45+ on the highway and all the windows up you can hear sort of a high pitched sound that changes pitches with vehicle speed. It sounds almost like a whistle you would hear if you were driving a car with a chunk of weather stripping missing.

The sound is barely noticable. In fact, I doubt I could capture it on a video or sound clip. I would rather get it repaired before I rip my rear end apart.

Does anyone have any ideas? The u-joints are original, but to me it does not sound like a bad u-joint. The rear differential is full and so is the transfir case. I think maybe I'll pull the differential cover off and see what I can see.

Thanks for any insight!
