Front shaft pinion seals

99 tahoe 4x4. I just did the seals on the front drive shaft this past weekend - the front differential pinion seal and the transfer case front output shaft seal. There is already a lot of good info on the forum regarding the pinion seal job.

2 things did not go according to plan.

First: I marked the yoke nut and counted the turns to remove it (11 rotations), pulled the yoke off and replaced the pinion seal. when putting the yoke back on I could not turn the nut the full 11 turns I could only get to 10. I think I read somewhere not to put an impact wrench on this nut so I did not go any further. How much of a risk am I taking of not having the yoke tight enough on the seal?

Second: while using the oversize socket to tap on the transfer case output shaft seal I dented the metal part between the inner and outer rubber seals. Is this one of those things that happens to mechanics and they never worry about it or am I at a significant risk of having that seal give out?

I drove it about 50 miles today and there is no sign of leaking at either seal so far.

Hopefully some of you experts can give me a sense of whether or not these are significant flaws or just things that don't always go according to the haynes manual...

I recently hit a deer, busted my grille and a turn lamp. I've replaced the grill but i'm holding off on the lamps bc i want to go aftermarket. Lots of people go chrome, but i was wondering what was out there in the area of going darker? I see alot of the newer vehicles with headlights with carbon fiber accents, do they offer something like this for my Tahoe? I'm not really big in the smoked lense look, but does anybody out there have any other suggestions that i should look at with upgrading my lighting situation? If you can give me links and pics of what you have or suggest it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Oh, and My tahoe is cosmetically stock, with a dark grey metallic paint. Looking forward to your suggestions.

Tahoe ran fine yesterday. Tried to start today. Initially made starter clicking like battery was dead. Then would make no noise while trying to start. Only dash light on was "check engine" light. Interior lights on, but radio would not turn on. With key in off position, noise was coming from what sounded like the radio speakers. Key chime would sound when it was not suppose to and not chime when it should. I've checked the battery connection, but haven't tried to jump start. Thanks.

98 Tahoe 4x4 noise help...

I've been chasing a noise for two months on my 98 tahoe. It sounds like a weird road noise, it comes in around 20-25 mph, like a light scrapping, and continues with speed, equallizing, around 50 mph, where you can still hear it. when it gets past 30-35 mph, it becomes more of a whooshing noise, like a flit flit at wheel rotation. I had this thing on and off the jack, rotated all the tires and wheels out, replaced the rear U joint, rear wheel bearings, (which the LR was making a slight noise) front wheel bearings, (and the left front a second time) and (unrelated) upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, front rotors, brakes, etc...

what I have noticed recently, in the last few days, is that you can sorta coast arount 35-40 mph, turning the wheel slightly left, maybe enough to make it drift to the left, draws the noise loud, and turning it slightly right, silences the noise. this only started to develop, and is making me think that I possibly got an issue with the left front driveshaft.

Anyone experience this? I am getting ready to swap out the LF halfshaft, and I guess I just want to fix this thing. Also, does anyone have a good timken/national number for the front steering knuckle seal? I cannot find a listing for this part anywhere, and if I am going to replace the axle, I want to put a new seal in as well.

thanks ahead of time, always find the forum helpful!

anybody have any problems with their speedometer. got out of my Tahoe to run into the store came out and put the key in the ignition and before i cranked it over i noticed the speedo reading 85 mph while i was still parked. once i started driving the speedo appeared to be moving normally except 85 was now zero mph and as i started to speed up the needle moved up as well, till it pegged out on the little stop to the far right. anybody with a clue as to what has happened and what can be done to fix this? is this a common issue? if so what can be done and what can i expect to pay to get it working correctly again. i have enough problem keeping the law following me with lights flashing when my speedo is correct.

I have a 1999 Tahoe V8 5.7.
I was getting an antifreeze/oil mix, so after two months of sitting, I took the engine down to the head gaskets, replaced with all new gaskets from the head up. Scraped and cleaned everything, new plugs, new wires. Got it back together, now it won't start, it'll turn over and sound like it wants to fire but won't. I have gone through the troubleshooting guide in my Haynes manual. But most of what they offer for ideas is pretty basic and beginner. I am hoping someone on here might have an idea that I haven't thought of. I would list the things that I have done, but I would much rather check everything again if you think that could be it. So go ahead, spitball away I'm all ears. Thanks.

I have a 99 tahoe that I took to the shop to have the transmission rebuild less than a year ago. Yesterday, as I was driving I stepped on the gas pedal, but the truck would not accelerate. The rpm would go up, but no response. I checked the 4x4 switch to make sure it was on 2hi, however the light next to it was not on.I took the part off and tested it on another tahoe, the part does not work. DO you think that this happened because of the faulty switch? or is it the transmission again? Is there any way that if the switch does not work, something like this could happen? I hope its the switch and not the transmission. Thanks in advance

It just dyed on my wife today while she was on highway, I got there and with key turned over it would not start just click and the locks would go off and on. The messages of Stabilitrac and Service 4 wheel drive were flashing. I checked the battery connections and they were fine so I moved to the fuse box thats under the hood and pressed all the fuses down and it started dinging and it would finally start. I started to drive it and it lost all power on the insturment cluster and the locks were locking and unlocking. It had no power as I floored it and it never would down shift. Any suggestions???

Oh and when i brake it does it too. It's smooth until i go from like 2 mph to zero. Almost like no matter how gradually i brake there's always that little slam when i come to stop. the problems don't seem like they'd be related, but maybe they are?
