fuel cap operation

Can someone explain how the fuel cap works? Mine has a one way check valve held closed by a spring. It will let air in but nothing out. Why is it like this when there is already a vent valve to vent the tank? Is it a back-up in case the vent valve sticks closed?

When the computer performs the evap self test what stops air from entering through the fuel cap and causing the test to fail? Is the vacuum in the evap system during the test not strong enough to over power the spring in the cap and therefore no air can enter?

Thanks in advance for any replies...Jack

Rear Cover oil leak

Hey all. I have a 99 silverado z71 4x4 with 155,000 miles on it. 5.3L vortec (iron/steel and not an aluminum block) I have a small oil leak from the rear of the motor drivers side. I notice the leak more right after I change the oil. I changed it myself and used an ac delco oil filter. I can assure this leak is not residual from the oil change. I have replaced the oil pan gasket. (which was leaking) and replaced the oil cooler cap and crush washer that is located just above the oil filter. 2-3 days after my oil change I can see clean oil (just to the point of dripping after 2-3 days) on the 2 tranny bolts, and the two drivers side rear oil pan bolts (one in front of and behind the oil filter). I have cleaned the outside of the motor and added dye to the oil, and I see the dye inside the tranny housing but not really dripping from the rear main seal. I cannot see any dye on the top rear or feel any oil anywhere from the top rear of the motor. So that can rule out valve cover gaskets. I have recently changed out my intake 6 months ago and I do not believe I have left anything loose. The only other place it can be coming from looks like the rear cover. I can do most repairs, but removing and reinstalling a tranny and a transfer case with a floor jack is probably out of my league. What would be a good price and how many hours is fair for this job? I would have them replace the rear main also, while there are there.

Is there anything I am missing???

This is a daily driver truck and not lifted I just want a better ride from it and am open to any and all opinions.

I have a 2001 Chev Silverado that the oil gauge does some flickering. it will be at 40 then go to 50 and back again. I have had this for a year now. could this be the oil pressure sensor? if so where is it on the engine. Also just lately my fuel gauge is doing the same thing jumping around. Is this a ground problem maybe? then I would think it would be on all 4 gauges. Let me know what you think

thanks

first off this is a van but I know they are basically the same setup as a silverado so I posted it here.

I am thinking the computer maybe junked out. Ok I bought a van around six months ago. It is a 1997 coversion van with the 5.7 tbi in it. When I bought it the fuel pump was bad so I temp. fixed it by hammering on the tank and it unstuck. It had been fine ever since. Last week I pull it in the garage to pull the junk 4l60e to have the clutches replaced, reinstall the trans and nothing, the van would crank over but the pump was not turning on, I try a new relay and nothing. I assume its a bad pump, I then install the new pump and the same thing just crank and no start. I also couldnt get the thing to really hit on ether either which is odd. I then check the old pump and it comes right on. So I keep trying to check grounds and make sure I didnt unhook anything on the trans job that would keep the pump from turning on and I cant find anything. Then today the battery was dead from all the cranking so I try to jump start it and cranked it over a few times and nothing then on the fourth try it started cranking a everything quit. NO more cranking, no interior lights, no dash lights, radio or anything. Keep in mind this was with jumper cables hooked up so there was plenty of power. I checked all of the relays I could think of and they are all great. Is there a main relay somewhere or what? Im thinking maybe the computer went out and maybe thats why it wouldnt turn the pump on then it crapped completely out when jumping it. Please help me.

Yesterday driving home from work (65 mile commute) about 5 miles from home, the low coolant level light came on, temperature stayed fine at about 180 which it always runs at, got home, let motor cool down, looked for leaks, didnt see anything, so added coolant to full level...on the way back to work today, halfway here, low coolant light came on again, and again tempurature stayed the same...so i made into work...when i got here, i popped the hood to take a look, and you can hear like a tiny hiss (like a small drop of water hitting a hot surface) and a puff of steam coming from the BACK of the engine...but again no leaks on the floor...

what should i look at first?:banghead:
