How to Get OBD Codes -- 1998 Durango

Surely this has been posted, but I couldn't find it in a search. Is there a way to get the codes for the Check Engine light on a 1998 Durango, short of hooking up an OBD scanning tool? Is there a jumper or other method that will force the check engine light to flash out the codes to me? Thanks.

Help 2000 Durango Transmission

Please help me solve my a transmission problem with my 2000 Dodge Durango. Transmission went out this year at 140,000 miles. We had a transmission shop rebuild the transmission.
Picked up car from mechanic and started to drive home. I live in the mountains; the car made it to 4000 ft and the check engine light went on and the car was stuck in third gear. I had the pedal to the floor; it would not go over 30 to 40 MPH (depending on the incline). I returned the car to the shop, the mechanic he said the check engine light error message read that is was overheating. He claimed it was not overheating and drove the car for a week (twice up the mountain) and it ran fine. I picked up the car and drove home and the exact problem reoccurred at 4000ft, same area.
Returned car to mechanic and he replaced the computer. Picked up car drove it home and the exact problem reoccurred, this time at 4500ft. Returned car again and he said that it might be a faulty computer from the factory. He ordered a new one and replaced the computer. Drove car home and it worked fine, made it up the mountain. I drove the car three days later down the mountain and on the way back up the mountain I had the exact same problem again at 4500 ft.
I don’t know what to do, we paid $3000 dollars for a new transmission and it still does not work. The mechanic doesn’t seem to be able to fix the problem, does anyone have any suggestions?’

2004 Dodge Durango possible sludge/neglect

Hi,

I am writing this post because I need help by anyone that can assist me. Last week my wife went out in the morning to start my 2004 5.7 hemi and it sounded like a can was in the engine. We towed it to dodge where they ask to see the oil change receipts for the last 5 years and they have to be under the 3000 mark. I have and submitted the receipts so thats not a problem. They then ask for a written permission form to tear down the engine to search for neglect. I researched this on the internet and what there trying to get at is if they find "sludge". The truck has about 90,000 on it and is apparently covered by a extended warranty. A couple of months ago I brought the truck in to the dealer because oil was appearing on the air filter. It was given back to me with th E.G.R. replaced and the PVC replaced. After realizing what these components do, and they obviously failed. They can cause engine sludge to form. I am expecting that dodge will still try and stick this on me if they find sludge, but what do i do to explain to them that there technician fixed the faulty valves but should have checked to see if sludge was forming. I also find it strange that whenever I had a dealer oil change they put in 5w/20 oil and not 5w/30. I know there is not much of a difference but it is not the recommended oil for my truck. They also would put it in the engine in the hot months. Any help would be appriciated. Its just frustrating knowing I am going to get blamed for there defective product.
