Alclad II vs. Kosutte Gin San...bye, bye Alclad!

I'm always open and looking for new possibilities in modeling. Aroun 10 years ago, I war reading the site of a great Japanese model car modeler and I saw that when he painted the muffler used a not so common product, so, I decied to give it a shot. I started to look aound the different Japanese sites, but, the product wasn't available. From time to time I check the sites, but, with no succes. Around 7 monts ago I was placing an order in the Rainbow Ten site, when I saw that the item had changed the brand, but, with the same label. Also, I was checkin the great o Japanese modeling tutorials(highly recommended) in Youtube and I saw the product working...in live color! I didn't thought it twice to add this item to my order. This product was sitting down in my house until 2 weeks ago when I tried it for the first time. Since it comes in powder form, some caution has to be taken with it. I just took a tiny amount from the container's tread...and boila!!!!...it was magic in front of my eyes. Trying from Alclads, Model Masters metallizers, SNJ Aluinum products, etc, etc, I had never seen anything like this.
OK,....I know, what's the name...KOSUTTE GIN SAN. Since it works with the same base like Alclad products, I airbrushed 3 spoons in order to make several trials. After the first one with the Kosutte, I tried Alclad, and by far, Alclad had no chance with it. The cost, a bottle of Alclad is around $8, this cost me $16 in Japan, but, a tiny amount that I took from the container's thread was enough to cover a spoon, there's no doubt that this will give you more chroming that Alclad.
How it works?, very simple. Like Alclad, it needs a glossy black base. You just rub a cotton swab to the part covering it completely, After that, you rub it with a flannel, a rag, or with the favorite...an old t-shirt. The more you rub it, the more chrome effect you get. Another advantage that puts Alclad way back, can be clear coated(it doesnt needs it), taped and touched by fingers with no effect.
You guys can see it working here in this Youtube video at 6:43

Here's a couple of pictures:
In this first picture we saw a clouseup of the Kosutte treated spoon.

Finally, Kosutte faces Alclad!

OK, what you do with real small parts, what I did..There's some real small cotton swabs from Gunze Sangyo #GT 037 like the ones below, or the ones intended for electronics that has a long stick. This last ones can be found in computer or electronic related stores like Radio Shack. I prefer the ones from gunze because are more solid and small.

Let me know your thoughts about this.

Hi, I have this powder and i must admit it really brings out the real chrome effect 1000 times better than paints. But I have not tried with clear coating it, maybe i should try one day. Thanks for sharing!

I like this too, but I used it on some wheels, and it was way too dark. They looked like black chrome. Maybe I didn't rub enough.

My thougts exactly. I think he used it to polish the spoons, he did say his favourite was an old t-shirt.

I would love to try this out though but with my clothes on.

I have some that I ordered about six years ago from HLJ. If you don't get the basecoat just right, it can appear too dark but it' a great product.

Can you explain a little further? I had a smooth, gloss black enamel base on some wheels and the finish still appeared too dark after rubbing out.

They both are applied in the same way, but, SJN was designed to be applied over metallic paints like silver and the Kossute over gloss black paint base.

Does anyone know if this is any different than the SNJ buffing powders?

The items I used were on a '58 Impala I built last year. The finish was decent but it didn't look as good as those spoons did.

That stuff looks great! I like that you can do "black" chrome with it too (or, I guess, will be doing it until you master it) because that's an effect I've been wanting to do for a while but couldn't figure out a convincing way. If anyone does find it, please let us know!

Thanks for the video link, too, that explained it really well. It's interesting how much a better understanding you get when you see it, even if you read a good description. Those modeling videos are great - I wish they were translated! I'm really curious about the painting effects he did later, around 8m; why was he holding his finger over his airbrush's tip and spraying bubbles into the cup??

One thing I don't like about Alclad chrome is that its not the same reflectivity at all angles. It looks great at wide angles to the light source then darkens as your eye moves in-line with the light.

In the spoon photos the Alclad II looks more reflective (though not as smooth) than the Gin San which worries me a bit. Notice the light source is always in the same location in all the photo's. I have a habit when photographing chrome. I subconsciously move around until I get maximum reflectivity. I bet if new pics are taken at a narrower angle relative to the light source the Gin San will look much darker than the AlClad.

I believe after adding thinner to the paint, spraying bubbles mixes them in the cup, a technique I picked up from the videos I use frequently. Saves time and means I don't need to waste paint or wash up any external mixing cups.

I wonder how long they've been out of stock with it. Usually HW doesn't really keep many items in stock anyway.

Anyone know any additional sources or at least similar products?

In case anyone having a problem getting it, Work's own online store says that the next production run is scheduled for April or May, so the usual Japanese stores should restock it by early summer.

I'm utterly surprised that no other product I can find is like this. You'd figured if it were this revolutionary there would be knock-offs of the same technology galore... but NO! none that I can find. :headshake:crying:

Besides that, it's almost impossible to find online, even on strictly Japan only websites. Definitely either a hot commodity or Work just doesn't make enough. :banghead:

However, there is a product that could be a midpoint between the Alclad II and KosutteGinSan:
