Is there a way to check for engine codes w/o a scanner?

Yeah, drive to an auto parts store, they can pull them for free.

I believe that Autozone in the US will read codes for free. In any event the cost of code readers are fairly reasonable. I think basic models can be found for about $150. If you plan to maintain your own vehicle(s) it is probably one of the most valuable tools to own.

OBD2/CAN code readers can be had for around $50, if you just want to pull codes. Harbour Freight is a retailer that carrys one for near that, online you can find them pretty cheap also.
