Dear Sirs and Madams,
I pray that you are able to assist me with my inquiry. I was taking a stroll the other day and found this wondrous automobile lying on the ground. Will you please tell to me what this vehicle is called? I would be most grateful and will give you my banana.

smooches,
Charleston Chew

Okay, but you will have to bring a much bigger dowry than that banana. :)

A Shelby GT500 Although it would not be able to drive at full speed with the police and the police right on his back. I think it's a nice car with an engine of meat!

My father bought one of these blasted things new. Only car I ever saw that liked to burn holes through the tops of its pistons and shoot its oil filler cap 3 feet in the air. After a couple of episodes of this nonsense (expensive to fix) in 2 years, he got rid of it.

hmmmm............... sounds like detonation, maybe incorrect timing or an improper advance curve, maybe??

Certainly, without the protection of water cooling, such problems seem can easily result in extensive damage,

It's interesting how many VW's were sold in the 1960's.(500,000 Beetles sold in 1970 alone)
I have some VW road tests from back then. In their opinion, the basic VW layout was deemed obsolete and provided dramatically substandard performance even by 1968 standards. The journalists preferred Renaults, Fiats or even Toyotas to VW's . But they still sold like mad, imo due to low price and effective advertising.

The problem was with its fuel system - according to Dad. It would work fine for a while, and, suddenly go dead lean. It would then hole a piston.
