Greetings, friends!
This is my first WIP on this site :)
At the first time a planned to build this model "from the box", but after unsuccessful painting and washing I have decided it to make some changes...

Really excellent work Anthony_RUS.

I have this kit and your WIP here has inspired me. One site to check regarding the 7 is: http://www.simplesevens.org/cars0000.htm (http://www.simplesevens.org/cars0000.htm)

Many photos and histories there that may help you decide on what colour to paint yours.

the weathering is just rediculous! I am curious, what was your process for painting and weathering the front engine cover? I use MM Metalizer paints and do similar, but nothing of this quality. I am building a 1/12 57 Chevy, I would like to apply some of these techniques.

Anthony_RUS
06-14-2010, 12:26 PM
Thanks.
The front panel was painted by tamiya x11 (tamiya and MM enamels are very alike)
For weathering i use mixture of tamiya akrylic paints x19 and xf1 (proportion approximately 3:1)

Now fuel pump is ready for use =)

Btw what are the two pipes running back from the engine? I don't know Lotus 7s tat well, but the only things I can think of them being are the lines for the oil pressure & water temperature gauges, but those would be much thinner.

As I mentioned before Anthony_RUS is doing some absolutely amazing work - truly an inspiration to all of us.

Based on their size and end location, those two rubber hoses are there to internally vent the engine. The American term I'm familiar with for this is a 'crankcase vent' - not sure what it might be called in the UK or other nations? If that is not done, pressure can build up causing gaskets and seals to blow out prompting oil leaks and a big mess (don't ask me how I know this...:frown:)

Cheers,
Andrew

Hum.... To me it looks pretty much like hoses whirch are taking oil vapors. Boths are ending in a tin can , where oil vapors condensate (oil batch??)
It is regularly used on carbureted engines which have no airboxes.
On "regulars" carbureted cars, those vapors are directly drove to the airbox, and then, burnt into the engine with the air/fuel mix.

Never heard about "crankcase vent". Maybe the same thing?
A part of the "blow by" flow is used to help scavanging oil...

Concerning the build, it's just brilliant.
I started this kit years ago, and messed it!
James is right, it's almost the same size as 1/43rd kits!!!

Olivier.

Olivier et al,

Regarding "crankcase vent", I found this on Wikipedia and it sounds like we are both thinking of the same thing. Unfortunately there is no French language page about it.

Cheers,
Andrew

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crankcase

Air ventilation

During normal operation, a small amount of unburned fuel and exhaust gases escape around the piston rings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piston_ring) and enter the crankcase, referred to as "blow-by". [6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crankcase#cite_note-cartalk_sep99-5) If these gases remained in the crankcase and condensed, the oil would become more diluted over time, decreasing its ability to lubricate. Condensed water would also cause parts of the engine to rust. [7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crankcase#cite_note-6) To counter this, a crankcase ventilation system exists to draw fresh air in from the air filter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_filter) and expel the gases out the PCV valve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCV_valve) into the intake manifold (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intake_manifold). In a non-turbo engine, the intake manifold is at a lower pressure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manifold_vacuum) than the crankcase, providing the suction to keep the ventilation system going. A turbo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbocharger) engine usually has a check valve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Check_valve) somewhere in the tubing to avoid pressurizing the crankcase when the turbo produces boost (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbocharger#Boost_threshold).
If an engine is damaged or enters old age, gaps can form between the cylinder walls and pistons, resulting in larger amounts of blow-by than the crankcase ventilation system can handle. The gaps cause power loss, and ultimately mean that the engine needs to be rebuilt or replaced. [6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crankcase#cite_note-cartalk_sep99-5)[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crankcase#cite_note-7), or out the PCV valve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCV_valve). Symptoms of excessive blow-by include oil being pushed up into the air filter, out the dipstick
