RDV changing coolant

01-23-2010, 11:38 AM
I have an 03 RDV and need to change my coolant. I can't locate a drain petcock for the radiator or engine. Where are they??

Also, I've heard to change the coolant to green and use distilled water. Is this the way to proceed or stick with Dexcool??

The rumor I have heard is that DEXCOOL is responsible for eating the gasket away causing the infamous LIM gasket leak the plagues the 3.4L. I have also heard it was a crappy gasket design. Some mechanics (non-dealers, 2 i know) have switch to standard coolant. The dealer mechanics I talk to swear up and down that DEXCOOL provides much better cooling than standard coolant. I would recommend that you follow manufacturer guidelines and use DEXCOOL.

My auto mechanic explained that DEXCOOL is rated for 5 years before replacing. For him, he recommends replacing every 3 years. And no more then 3 years usage. He also explained that original Dexcool formula was "too strong". Today's DexCool formula is more environment friendly (like many new fluid mixtures). Thus, its much friendlier on engine gaskets as well.

As stated by prevous posture, stay with Dexcool and replace every 3 years (instead of recommended 5 years). Works for me, and my 2003 FWD RDV (still on its original engine gaskets).
