Change of pace. Flopper time.
Victim:

Started out with a Johan Pinto funny car and I'm basically trying to keep it OOTB. I'll probably add an MCG drag parts detail set to it for the "interior" details though.
I've been researching this car for a while now. It started out as the blue Revellaser Pinto in 71, then changed to this red Mickey Thompson version in 72, then burned up going down the strip and was rebuilt with a new body and a Chrysler HEMI in mid 72 to finish the season.
Since the kit comes with the Ford 429 (hemi, by the way ;) ), I'll make this the early red car. It seemed to have had about half the mods the later red car had. I can't find any definite info on it, of course.
It has a peculiar chassis in it too. It was right between the times of more modern chassis' and the older ladder style. I'm not sure if there is a name for it, but MT seemed to be on the cutting edge as I believe this was the first car to run a full titanium chassis. Not sure on that detail though.
Enough BS, here is my WIP so far... ;D

I did quite a bit of work on the body. Black areas removed or modified.

Shaved the lower edge in the front to get the front end down, opened the windows, opened the blower hole, and put a notch in the front spoiler. I scratched the rear spoiler too. The kit one was way too narrow and didn't come down the sides at all.

Now that I've got it lower, the oil pan is hitting and the front "suspension" is WAY out of whack. I'm in the process of rebuilding the front arm, then I'll work on the oil pan...

Scratch built (rebuilt) the front end. When I mocked it up, it was way to wide and tall. I went for low and narrow. Added scratch built shocks too. First time there... Not bad for a rook. Just wish I would have painted the springs to make them stand out a little more.

Engine is almost done. Anyone have any good shots of a 70's magneto setup!?! ;D I have no clue how to wire that thing!
http://www.dlphnfn.com/WIPs/DSCF5441.jpg

Wheels and tires are painted Alclad copper and gold. Liquid mask for the fronts. That stuff worked perfect! Wheels and tires out of a PL drag Mustang.

Paint is done (except for rear bumper). Tamiya Sliver Leaf, Clear Red, Pearl, then Clear.
And, of course, the requisite mockup! ;D

All the interior tins are painted aluminum and buffed (that stuff works awesome, BTW). All I have left are a few things I'm scratch building and wiring and some "interior" details like steering wheel, brake lever, etc. Then it's off to the races!

Not a problem. Is here good, or would you rather in Muscle?

Looks cool, off to a good start.

Fully agree

I don't know anything about this genre of car so I'll be happy to follow along and learn :)

Fantastic project. I'm a real big fan of anything to do with Mickey Thompson. I think you are doing a great job on this and everything looks clean and well done. I usually wind my own springs from wire and never can get the spacing to look even and neat so thank you for your idea on using a common screw. All these years and I never would have thought to do it that way. Looking forward to more progress.

This should be the last update before completion... :smokin:
Finally ordered and received my parts for the flopper. PE sheet from MCG for steering wheel and brake, and a magneto from scale repros plus (I think). Now I just need to take some time and add the spark plug wires, fuel lines, magneto, oil lines, and this will be pretty much wrapped up.
If anyone has any hints/tips/pics on wiring up a fuel pump, I'll take em!! :iceslolan

I really like this build. The detail work, paint, and decals are very nice. What did you use to mask the wheels
