Ford Escort 2XZ problems... Need advice
01-14-2010, 05:06 PM
OK this is about a 2003 Ford Escort 2XZ.
The idle races and does not seam to kick down at times. At the stop lights you have to put it into neutral.
The lights on the dash quit working.
So we took the car to a place to have it repaired. They quoted about $890. to change the motor mounts and go to a auto salvage yard to pull a dimmer switch out of a wrecked car. This sounds like a bogus ( As car talk guys say Boooooogus ) deal. So I paid the amount to retrieved the car and took it home. Any advice would be most helpful. Thanks

The idle problem could be the idle air control valve just needing a cleaning or you could have a vacuum leak. Have you checked the fuse for the dash lights? I know this is going to sound stupid, but also check the dimmer for the dash lights to make sure it hasn't got turned all the way down. If it does need to have a new light/dimmer switch it will cost a quite a bit to get it repaired unless you do it yourself, because I'm pretty sure the air bag has to be removed to get to the switch. A Haynes/Chilton's repair manual is one of the best $25. investments you can make if you want to try to work on your own car.

Will pick up a book in the morning. The fuses are all good. The dimmer does nothing turned or anything. But I will get the book and give your advice a good try. I just know ( or think ) their is no way motor mounts is gonna make an idle run fast. Thanks, I will let you know how it goes.

I don't see how the motor mounts could have anything to do with it. Sounds like the Idle Air Control like previously posted. Stay away from that shop! :2cents:
