95 Windstar - How do I clear airbag code 21

95 Windstar: Due a low speed deer hit, I have replaced both deployed airbags and the controller (reclaimed from a salvage yard). I still have a code 12 - low battery voltage error from the airbag system. How do I resolve this? Is there a battery within the airbag controller itself? If yes, is it serviceable?

Thanks,
David

CORRECTED: Code is 12 - Low Battery

UPDATE: Figured out I had to replace blown 10A fuse which changed code 12 into code 52 Backup Power Supply - Voltage Boost Fault.
How do I clear this fault (tried removing battery for 5 minutes - didn't work)?

My power distribution diagrams for the '95 are showing a total of three fuses feeding into the airbag system, so you might want to check the other two:

Fuse U, 10 amp, engine compartment fuse box
Fuse 21, 10 amp, interior fuse panel
Fuse 14, 5 amp, interior fuse panel

Thanks Selectron. I checked both fuses 14 and 21, both visually and with a multimeter, and they are both OK.

Don't know if they are resettable with a diagnostic tool or if I must replace controller.

Any other ideas?

David

Try resetting the computers & control modules.
1) disconnect the battery.
2) Touch the pos cable to gnd for a couple of seconds.
3) Connect battery

Unfortunately, the only information I have on the airbag system is the power distribution diagram indicating those three fuses.

I was curious about why they were using a voltage booster though so did a little searching, in the course of which I came across a discussion on an F150 forum but which also mentions the Windstar. That links to an article which mentions your two codes - code 12 followed by a code 52, and explains how to clear the code 52. Link (http://www.fordf150.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=53760)

There's also an old post here on the Windstar forum which broadly agrees with that description of how to clear code 52. Link (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=403561)

But then to muddy the waters, there's also a post here on the forum which reckons it's a component failure - thermal fuse - within the airbag control unit. Link (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=677717)

If it really is a thermal fuse failure then the code would still be present after going through the code-clearing procedure. However, if the code clears then it wouldn't have been a thermal fuse failure after all, so if it was my vehicle then I'd probably try clearing it first. Have a read of the three links though and see what you think.
