Mercedes Benz/ AM Radio

I Have a 2010 Mercedes Benz / Freightliner Motorhome with a radio antanna built into the windshield. I think the overhang of the motorhome over the windshield (better than 2 ft) shadows the antanna so much that there is no AM reception for all intents and purposes) FM reception isnt too bad. I think if I locate a new sidemount antanna either farther forward on the front fender or up on the motorhome itself, that the AM reception would be much better. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has had a simular problem and if they think this approach will help this problem.
