Probably your neutral safety switch didn't get connected. If that's the case then your backup lights likely aren't working either.

Does not crank!! also where is the neutral safety switch and how can you check if its bad.... could it be a fuse?? the car was fine and driving no problems until my husband took out and replaced the tranny...

the switch is usually on the transmission. have you also try to adjust the shift lever, could the starter solenoid wire be loose when the trans was removed..

The neutral safety switch is on the tranny and has a 3-wire plug going to it. It's located on the driver's side near the shifting arm. It's function is to prevent the starter from turning unless the tranny is in park or neutral. Of course if it didn't get plugged back in the starter would not crank. It's highly unlikely that you'd blow a fuse when changing a tranny since there are no hot wires down there that are related to the starter circuit.
Everything I said is assuming that the starter was reinstalled correctly and all of the wires were properly connected to it.
