help! when i start my mustang cold or for the first time in a couple hours it will have a slight screech or squeal only for a few seconds while starting. I have already tried replacing belt tensioner pulley and the timing belt. About to get the starter pulled and tested. Perhaps it is the plunger of the starter that drives the flywheel not retracting and causing a grind? Well maybe we can figure out with this audio i have recorded:

squeal.mp3 - 0.30MB (http://www.zshare.net/audio/68666776d0839d23/)

squeal2.mp3 - 0.25MB (http://www.zshare.net/audio/68666806d5a2bb9f/)

You don't by chance have the A/c on? If no then it sounds like the Bedix gear in the starter.

I think it's the Bendix on the starter causing the squeal. When it's cold the grease gets thick and retards the retraction on the Bendix. I'd take the starter off and clean the Bendix drive and relube it with some white lithium grease.

I may be taking a stab in the dark, but could it be the alternator? I had a different vehicle that had an alternator squeal and they rebuilt the bushings/bearing/pulley and the noise went away. Also, in the cold the noise was worse.
