Hello all,

New to the forum and I'm glad I found it. I have a 1998 Chevy Malibu with about 153,000 on the odometer. Before my first to second gear in the transmission was having some trouble as I was low on fluid due to a leak in the trans gasket. One weekend I removed the pan and old gasket and put a new filter in. I put about 6 quarts of the correct trans fluid in along with Lukas trans fix, which by itself is yet another quart. Things started to improve immediately after the procedure via the test drive and as always the torque converter was fully functional. The reverse gear was getting a little rough as I would increase RPM's but there was only one speed the gear wanted to go in - SLOW. Just the other day as I am backing out of my driveway the reverse stopped working. I heard no sound, and there was no jerk from the transmission; the reverse gear simply would not engage. The car drives and shifts fine when I am going forward, but once again, will not go backwards. It will roll in neutral, but not when in reverse.

On the above scenario, what is going on? Is it a module or solenoid perhaps or do I just need to have the entire thing replaced? Please let me know either way and thank you for your time.

Replace it and you can get an used transmission cheap since most yards do not sell them since this transmission is usually a good transmission. What burns this transmission up is that some people do not know how to check the fluid level since there is no dipstick.
