been sitting for year or so. got it started idles no smoke give gas oil smoke. is there any thing i can put in it that will stop it until can get re-ring kit first of next month?

You didn't mention if it burned the oil before it was parked a year ago. Assuming it did not burn oil before, an oil change and a little bit of driving should stop the burning of oil shortly.

i really don't know it was a gift. so i hope you are right. any certain oil best for one thats been sitting?

I have always lived by the rule that you never put synthetic oil in an older engine because it will loosen up all the crud that is holding that engine together. Either that and/or older components (maybe even piston rings) cannot take the synthetic oil.

That's really an unproven old wives tale. Deposits, sludge, or any other type of build-up is not strong enough to hold an engine together. Therefore, their removal will not bring about any impending doom to anyone's little corner of the world.
