crazy problem in my 2.2l bet you cant figure this one outjason152003 11-07-2009, 08:19 PM timing chain broke two weeks ago changed it and works fine but while i was doing this the alternator shorted out on the frame my stupidity for not unhooking the battery i know.... so i got a new alternator and battery and they have both been tested after i installed them and both passed but it still wont charge the battery and i cant figure out why i looked for a fusable link and there is not one the only thing i could see is a cylinder looking thing above the starter not sure what it is but when the alternator shorted out a cloud of smoke came up from that area after some sizzling so please give me some ideas i need help i am lost on this one........ okay well the starter still works so i dont know that it would be the solinoid cause it tries to turn over but i got to hold my foot to the floor just to get it to want to start at all is there a main relay in the car or something like that and also where would the fuse be for the alternator or could it of fried something else?????????????????????????? Airjer_ 11-07-2009, 08:55 PM The big wire on the baqck of the alternator should have battery voltage. I would bet that if you checked there would be none becuase you fried the fusible link. The fusible link is at the starter (follow the big wire from the alternator to the starter to figure out which one). The charging voltage comes from the alternator through the big red cable, through the fusible link which is bolted to the big terminal of the starter and then through the big cable that is also attatched to the starter and then finally to the battery. jason152003 11-07-2009, 09:02 PM do you think this will fix the rough idle too and would a loss of charge make the car run really bad Airjer_ 11-07-2009, 09:13 PM It shouldn't effect the way it runs or idles until battery voltage gets extremely low. It would probably take a couple of hours for that to happen. You are likely dealing with two issues. A charging issue and a driveability issue. jason152003 11-07-2009, 11:02 PM well when i changed the alternator it started up in the morning and had rough idle likea minor miss fire then when i rev it up it sounds fine i tried to take it to my work so i could get it on hoist and look at everything but i drove for about 15 min and it died on me i got a boost from a nice driver and it started up i couldn't get far i couldn't get over 3000 RPM in 1st gear and it died two blocks later.... so i tried to boost it and it wouldn't start at all just keeps turning over and not firing.... i tried to start it with my foot to the floor and it tries to fire i have to hold my foot down to the floor, turn the key, and it will tease with a little bit of running bounces between 500 rpm to 800 rpm for about 20 seconds and then dies..... if that can help you help me fix it so i can get it home and back on the road:banghead: serge_saati 11-08-2009, 12:38 AM Usually, when an alternator fries up, an high voltage arc at output and it damages the PCM. A partially damaged PCM let the car running, but engine runs roughly sometime, especially when engine is hot, cause it works on closed loop. I don't say that it's the only issue that you have. But it's the first thing to consider. manicmechanix 11-08-2009, 03:53 AM Did you try replacing the fusible link yet like was mentioned by airjer? the battery won't charge up if that fusible link burned out. A discharged battery can cause rough idling and stalling. You are going to ruin this new battery if you don't fix that link. Is your battery light lit on your dash? serge_saati 11-08-2009, 10:50 AM When engine is running, test to see if you've same voltage on alternator B+ terminal and on the battery. You should have around 14V on both. If you're not able to let engine running, measure resistance between B+ and battery. The positive wire on B+ and negative wire on battery positive terminal. jason152003 11-08-2009, 03:09 PM no charge to the battery at all serge_saati 11-08-2009, 03:44 PM OH, so it must be the fusible link. J-Ri 11-11-2009, 05:10 PM The fusible link's definitely bad, unless it's been fixed since Airjer said that in the second post :) Charge that battery up before you fix the link though, you will overheat the alternator using it to charge a battery. If you let the battery get low enough that the car dies, then it will definitely make the car run rough and not want to start. Charge the battery and replace the fusible link. Post back if that doesn't fix the drivability part. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
