When it doesn't work check for power at the socket. Sometimes a filament will break and then reconnect when jarred, always a possibility.

The brake and turn signal are on the same circuit in the rear. The turn signal switch is what interrupts the power from the brake switch and allows power from the flasher to go to the rear bulb. It is entirely possible for the turn signal switch to also cause this.

If it does it again find out if front or rear signal lights are droping out and work on that end.
Bad bulbs and bulb sockets and wiring and grounds are things to check and even turn signal switch.
But you need to catch it when it is doing it.
Good Luck
