Depends on what engine you have....

If you have a 3800 than you have a 4T60-E( RPO FW2 = 3.06 Final drive ratio )

Its 14 years old, and moving a van... That trans has lived a good life... Mine failed 2 years ago... Had issues with another unit and did a rebuild on the original.. still kicking 1.5 years later..

How many miles on the van? And are you mechanically inclined?

we got it at 170,000 miles on it. Yes I am mechanically inclined, I drive a 89 chrysler conquest most of the time and tinker with it alot.I figured out what it is, its a 3 speed.
I pulled the tranny pan off and there were chunks in it so something is broke. I am gonna look around for a tranny for it so I can replace it. however I have never done a front wheel drive vehicle before

The 3T40 is a pretty good Trans... Most of the time the 3T40 in the vans would live a long life...

You are in for a treat in replacing that trans... Not really that hard, just really tedious...

I'm gonna rebuild tranny but I don't have a book yet. I'm gonna get a book but I started taking the front end apart and I would like to know how the axle shafts come out of the tranny. How are they attatched to the tranny? Can I pop them out with two pry bars?

WIth the 4T60, a gentle pry out , idellaly all around in steps, will pop them out. I guess the 3T40 would be similar....
Have a look at my picture bank...look for 3T40 and 3.1 graphics.

Should be able to pry them out with a Pry Bar.. GM has a tool for the axles called a wedge.... You tap it on the side of the axle until it pops out.. what you really popping is the C Clip from the Groove, once the C clip comes out of the groove the axle will come out.. Not always as easy as it seems...lol
