I have a 99 Taurus. The Power steering is making a humming noise. When you steer it gets very loud. The fluid level is a little low. It was fine when it was checked just a week ago. I believe the pump is bad? If this sounds like the case does anyone have some help make the change easier? Any help would be appreciated.

I changed the power steering pump on a 99 taurus about 2 weeks ago. It ran fine, the steering was alot smoother than before, and the noise was eliminated. I checked the fluid level daily and added some if needed. Then one night the power steering just went out. It was completely gone. So the next morning I checked to see where all the fluid went. The clamp on the boot on the passenger side of the steering rack was off. Do I need to replace the entire steering rack to fix the issue? or can i put the clamp on and get it to hold fluid again. Also what could be the cause? air in the system? any help would be greatly appreciated.

The boot is just a protective cover to keep out dirt/water. If there was fluid coming out of the rack, the whole rack will need to be replaced.

You eventually will need to change the pump.

In the mean time I have used one of the Lucas products to make it quiet down.

Is the steering rack going to be a difficult swap? Im at school right now so I dont have tons of tools with me or time to do it.
