On my 2nd day at Barber my diff started to make some unhappy noises. It was howling. The howling changed only with speed and not on or off the throttle. Is this the failure or a result from some other failure? I'm planning on just replacing the bearings as I can't see any other issues. The oil was metallic looking.

Jim,

You need to look at your pinion bearings. How did the ring and pinion look?

Ring and pinion looked fine. I have not pulled the pinion out of the support to look at the bearing. It feels fine. I haven't found the appropriate torque wrench to set the bearing pre load on the pinion. I'm considering not replacing that bearing.

OK, after days of trials and tribulations, I'm almost finished. It turns out my carrier was bad. At least the machine work on the bearing caps was bad. It's almost like these aren't the caps that would have been machined on this carrier. I can't figure out what could have happend to the carrier to make the bearings fit so poorly. Anyways, I have a new carrier, bearings, ring and pinion. Everything is coming together and just about finished.
