The PS quit on my 2000 Tahoe, it has a 5.3 4X4 with auto ride. Here is a quick history of what has happened and what was done.

Had an external leak from around where the EVO and the PS hose connect to the pump…..Took the pump out to find leak, replaced
the pump since it was out anyway. The leak was coming from around the EVO, it was loose. That was 3K ago no leaks or issues until
yesterday when the PS stopped working…no assist.

The pump makes no noises, has correct fluid level and no leaks. On start up I have PS for 3 – 5 seconds then nothing until I turn it off let it sit for
a minute or so then PS for 3 -5 seconds then nothing again. I then unplugged the steering wheel speed sensor which should give full pressure
but no change.

Any Ideas?

Thanks, Rick

Welcome to AF.

Unplug the EVO at the back of the pump. That should give you full pressure. If no help it could be the EVO at the pump or the pump itself? Or the steering box? Or a problem with the EVO/Passlock module? The only way to diagnose this module is with a high end scan tool that can access it for DTC's

Let us know.

what power steering fluid did you use...?

there is a pressure valve that could be releasing pressure..on back of pump ...

So here's an update, the Tahoe sat parked for 2 days, I pulled it into the garage to work on it and the PS was working again. I had done nothing to it since parking it. So last night I flushed the system using NAPA fluid and drove it to work today.....still working:screwy:

What I hate is that I don't know why it stopped working and then why it started again??? Last time it quit I had to drive it 200+ miles back home without PS since I have not fixed anything I'm afraid it will so it again.

Any thoughts?? I'm thinking I should just replace the PS pump since it's still under warranty???

I saw your same post on it in Bat-Auto about it.
As two people both {good techs}have said one here and one on Bat your pressure valve stuck or was releasing pressure.
Maybe dirt stuck it or bad /burred or tight valve.
Pull it out and look at it.
If pump is under warranty they should give you another pump.
Good Luck

Mt-2500 thanks for the input I went back and found I missed a post from Transman and you're right it was good information.

I agree with you and Transman and will replace the pump if it acts up again.

If it is a Fenco pump, get your money back and they are junk.Had one brand new, installed the pulley and the shaft came out.It was a fenco pump made in Mexico and the clip holding the shaft in was never installed from the factory.Cardone is the only choice and are made in the USA.

this is then most likely the pressure valve..flushing the fluid will help..if this is good further on that is most likely this valve..

my power steering was losing its ease of motion and after flushing out the old fluid the ease of steering returned , to normal..

most likely this is 10year old fluid ...good idea to flush out the fluid every 5-6years...but not many owners do any of this..just change oil , period..
