'98 Malibu broke cam 3.1racerjim0 10-17-2009, 04:58 PM My daughters car quit on her right as she got on the freeway. Got it towed. When I tried to start it, it sounded like it had jumped timing so I tear into it only to discover that the timing marks where correct. Well I slept on it and figured it had to be a bad cam so I took the front valve cover off and turned the motor over to find only the first three rocker arms on the front head were moving. So I guess her cam broke in half. My questions for anyone who has experienced this before is: did this damage the cam bearings can the cam be removed without damaging the cam bearing should I get a junk yard cam to replace this one if it can be removed is this an interference fit motor ie.,are the valves bent(haven't done a leakdown test yet) any sugjestions from folks with similar woes Thanks in advance, Jim Airjer_ 10-17-2009, 10:50 PM it is not unheard of on the 3.1 liters Get a used engine! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
