94 gmc fuel pump

i have the repair book for my truck and it states the fuel pump should only run for about 2 seconds. if my fuel pump runs for 20 to 30 seconds does this mean it is going bad.

i think that the fuel pump relay might be bad. im not totaly sure, but the fuel pump relay should only let the feul pump run for 2 seconds.
