2000 Durango, cant set to defrost, and heat not working

I just tried replacing the AC switch on the dash (I was told that was the problem) but it didn't change the problem (and the part cost $75)

I think a couple of the vacuum lines might be disconnected at the other end, cause I can kinda hear some airflow, even when the air/blower is turned off.

as for the heat not working, is that related? the heater lines under the hood get really hot, I am thinking that a flap is not opening and allowing hot air into the cabin.

please help.

EDIT:

I was just looking for loose vacuum lines, when I saw a disconnected line (missing an elbow?) is that important? looks like valve cover vent (maybe why I smell burning oil sometimes?)
