420a Clutch how many splines? 17 or 20?

I'm about to have my Auto converted to 5-Speed, the guy has everything I need for the swap except the clutch. So I'm trying to track one down, and its little more confusing than I thought.

I've been to places like Parts Train, Auto Parts Warehouse, Discount Auto, and I keep finding clutches with 17 or 20 spline teeth. The thing that doesn't make sense is some of the 20 spline clutches will say "Fits: GS, RS, GSX, GST, Base, Spyder". And some of them only say "GSX, GST, SPYDER". Now the 17 Spline clutches say "GS, RS, Base" or nothing specific at all.

I'm gonna say the clutch should be a 17 spline clutch, but I'm not sure. It makes no sense that a GS and GSX can use the same clutch when the motor and trans are different.

I ask because I'd hate to buy the wrong thing, and I've searched around for the answer but I don't find anything clear.

Also what would be the best place to buy a clutch?

The clutches are not the same and aren't interchangable. I can let you know how many splines when I get home today

I believe the 420a is 17 and the 4g63 are 23.

Ok, thanks man!

Yeah so far its looking like 17 splines, so I don't understand why these sites are giving me clutches with 20.

ya well when I bought my first clutch I didn't understand why a company was telling me that ACT told them that the clutch I bought was specific for the 420a when clearly it wasn't...

Yeah, I guess they're mixing the two up.

Any idea why the 420a clutches I keep finding cost more than a clutch for a turbo?

Supply and demand. Not a huge calling for 420a clutches holding mad-amount of power. 4g63s are all over the place.

What do you guys think of this Sachs kit? http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/Mitsubishi/Eclipse/Sachs/Clutch_Kit/1999/GS/4_Cyl_2-dot-0L/W0133-16004 (http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/Mitsubishi/Eclipse/Sachs/Clutch_Kit/1999/GS/4_Cyl_2-dot-0L/W0133-1600463.html?tlc=Engine%20%26%20Drivetrain#reviews )63.html?tlc=Engine%20%26%20Drivetrain#reviews (http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/Mitsubishi/Eclipse/Sachs/Clutch_Kit/1999/GS/4_Cyl_2-dot-0L/W0133-1600463.html?tlc=Engine%20%26%20Drivetrain#reviews )

Or this Exedy kit? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160367094458&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

I'm not really looking for anything special right now, just need something to get me going for now.

They're both OEM-spec so you're not going to get any more holding power out of it. I hear Sachs is good with their stockers, and never really heard anything bad out Exedy. Your call. I would say since your in there, get something a little better so you don't have to worry about it as much later on.

To be honest, I am thinking about it. I just can't find anything within my budget for the 420a. But I'm looking.
