I have a ’94 (LE, 3FSE, auto trans, 220K miles) with a hesitation problem. When starting up from a full stop (stop light, stop sign, etc…) there is are few seconds of hesitation/loss of power as RPMs build from idle. It never lasts more than a few seconds and only happens when I’m just starting to move from a stop. Seems to be worse if the car has been sitting in the sun. Six months ago I removed and cleaned the IAC valve and replaced the EGR valve. Anyone know what this might be?

Simple stuff first. Old plugs, plug gap too wide? Solid plug to wire/coil contact? Dirty injectors, weak fuel pressure? When was last tune up?

A little deeper. Weak coil, TPS output erratic, weak fuel pump.

Other than tip-in problems any rough running, missfire problems? No check engine light right?

First of all if you have a 94 Camry the engine is the 5SFE.

To add to what RIP recommended, misses under load are most often caused by faulty ignition system components. I would threfore also add checking/replacing the spark plug wires. How old are the plug wires? When was the last time they were replaced? Were they replaced with OEM or aftermarket wires?

Thank you both. Pardon the engine type-o, its the 4 cyl. Check eng light is off. Ignition wires are OEM but pretty old. I'm going to replace wires and plugs as first step. Will post results.

I would avoid the cheap aftermarket wires and stick with OEM. In my experience the cheap aftermarket ones need to be replaced again in about 1 year or 20,000 miles. Try some of the online Toyota dealer websites for a good price on the OEM ones.

Ditto. Went through two sets from AutoZone a few years ago. Got the first set only because I needed them fast and they were close. One failed a year later. Replaced under warranty. Second set failed 8 months later. Replaced with OEM almost two years ago and no problems since.

Following up... wires, plugs, cap, and rotor all seemed to be original parts (wires had the year on them - guessing on the rest). Replaced all with OEM/NGK and it's running better than it has in years!
