1997 Tahoe WoesMazdaX 09-17-2009, 02:27 AM Well new to the whole Tahoe scene ..so here it goes. Purchased a 1997 Tahoe with 131,000 miles and all was well. After about 150 miles the CEL light popped up. had the codes pulled from Autozone and got "P0430" and with Autozones versions of code pulls you get a huge list of s#%&t with it. The vehicle seems to perform fine - getting decent power and mpg...any thoughts ? Another issue I am having that I searched for that I did not find any results for was that my stock radio only has sound coming out of the right side. So I ripped the dash & doors apart to find any problems...looked like someone had a aftermarket headunit in before but ran a adapter to the factory harness and used their own speaker wire to power the speakers. The dealership I purchased the Tahoe from replaced the stock system and cd unit. I at first thought possibly bad speakers but I switched them around and still nadda. The other day I turned the radio on and heard a faint sound coming from the left side so I faded/balanced it over to left only F&R and it's like 1/20th of the sound that the right side is making..any thoughts ? Whoever had the vehicle before did a lot of homemade wire up jobs..I spent around 2 hours ripping out dead end wires , shorted leads , make shift stereo wiring , a make shift set of trailer light wirings and a few other needless things like lighted pedals , neons under dash and just stupid crap for a tahoe. On the upside it has the B&M supershift electronic shifting device which I have no idea what it is...will do research lol. Last problem is they put enourmous tires on the thing with stock 16" rims and I now have a very lazy steering wheel and I do not like it. Seems much worse at highway speeds than at low in town speeds. I have a baby on the way and dont want steering problems to happen with my boy in the tahoe...if you know what I mean. Any help or thoughts on this as well would be greatly appreciated. MazdaX 09-17-2009, 02:31 AM I would also like to kind of kick up the performance if you know any good bolt ons for the 5.7 vortec. =) Godofwarmike 09-17-2009, 03:18 AM P0430 - O2 sensor bad or bad cat. most likely it isnt an exhaust leak if it isnt too loud. if i were you id take it back to the dealership since if it came on after about 150 miles it sounds like they cleared the codes to sell it. and if they did that it is most likely the cat so they didnt eat a few hundred for a cat or two. since that never works without you paying a crazy amount I would take it to a local shop and have them put a good OBD II scanner on it and it will pin point what is really wrong with it. as for the loose steering check the ball joints, pitman arm, tie rods. to see if they are warn. j cAT 09-17-2009, 09:15 AM I would not keep this vehicle sounds totally messed up... these wire problems could if not properly fused cause the car to go up in flames... the tires must be the correct size for the vehicle,,check with the tire shop/driver door sticker to see if they are correct.. DTC 430 usually means a bad, cat converter.... AS STATED THEY CLEARED THE CODE TO SELL THIS VEHICLE ! MazdaX 09-17-2009, 10:21 AM Well this is UTAH and aparently that is not illegal to do here :/ so now I have to eat it all out of pocket. Can I run dual pipes and use those magnaflow 4 state legal cat's if I use one on each pipe and have the o2 sensor before & after the cat's ? These are cheap on ebay and magnaflow seems reliable for the most part. j cAT 09-17-2009, 06:28 PM Well this is UTAH and aparently that is not illegal to do here :/ so now I have to eat it all out of pocket. I don't know about whats legal here there....what I do know is If you kill or injure someone because you have the wrong equiptment / defective equiptment on your vehicle you will be responsible ... also if you transporting baby in vehicle good luck.. MazdaX 09-25-2009, 01:47 AM Well I had basically a whole new front end put in. Parts&labor was only 600 bucks now the thing is like turn on demand and is in fantastic driving shape. My only issues now remain with the Cat'. and the stereo..which had another odd function the other day. I was listening to the radio ( right side only as its the only side putting out sound ) and it waskinda 'bassy' I guess then suddenly it lost all bass and was putting out a high pitch trebble so I shut it off..started up the Tahoe next day and turned on the radio and it acted normally minus only being on the right side...what the hell ? lol... MazdaX 10-15-2009, 12:06 AM Ok well everything has been groovy as of late but suddenly the other day when I was driving in the rain my wipers quit working. I pulled off the road - checked the fuses ( good ) smacked the wiper motor ( no response ) and randomly flicked the switch on and off and nothing. All it did was make a buzzing sound from behind the speedometer ( what the hell ? ) I would appreciate some insight on this haha. southtowniceman 10-20-2009, 07:55 PM There was a recall for the wiper control box way back, stating the wipers could stop working at any given moment. Mine did on my '97, but the mileage was too high for coverage. I replaced the box and it hasen't given me any problems since. I think the cost was around $30 but I can't be sure. Besides I got it thru a friend at his cost. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
