I have a 1999 hyundai ellantra. The key sometimes only comes back to the accesory position and not all the way back to off. i have to disconnect the battery to get the key to turn all the way back to get the key out. this doesnt happen all the time. what can it be.

Are you sure the steering wheel is straight when you turn the car off and not in a locked position? I see that all the time. Have had customers tow their car in here because of it.

Is this an auto or manual transmission? God, I haven`t been inside a 99 in years.... could be the key tumblers themselves wearing out.. but that normally turns up trying to start the car... does your ignition have the requirement of pushing the key in at the end to remove it?

If you have a spare key (You should) try it. See if it does it too. Solving a problem like this is troubleshooting, and eliminating as much as possible to arrive at a solution.

it is a automatic transmission. like i said sometimes the key turns all the way back and comes out and sometimes it doesnt. if it doesnt turn all the way back and come out, i disconnect the negative on the battery and i turn the key back to off and the key comes out.
