Metal clicking noise from rear when marking right turnrubs 08-27-2009, 11:00 PM Hi, I noticed since yesterday that whenever I start the car after it was parked for long time (normally going to office or coming back) there is metal cracking noise from rear when i just move in reverse and then same kind of noice when take right turn on slow speed. This is 1998 LE with 202k miles. What are the possible issues? Thanks --Rubs Mike Gerber 08-28-2009, 09:09 AM Are you sure the noise is not coming from the front? A worn cv joint on the left front axle of the car could be making the clicking noise when you turn right. As you turn right the weight of the car is shifted to the left, causing a worn out cv joint to click. Look in the left front (driver's side) wheel well area and see if you see grease thrown around in there. That is one sign of a ripped boot. Also, turn the wheel all the way to the left and look at the accordian shaped rubber boot over the cv joint. Is it torn open? After the boot is ripped, the grease is thrown out and then water, salt in the Winter and dirt get inside the boot and eventually ruin the cv joint. If the cv joint is causing the noise, the usual repair is to replace the entire axle with a rebuilt one. Cost would be around $200 - $250 at a repair shop. Mike Airjer_ 08-28-2009, 10:37 AM How about when you go over a bump? rubs 08-28-2009, 12:51 PM No noise during bump, only when turning right side or reverse at slow speed. JennyDee 08-29-2009, 08:36 AM Suggest that you remove the rear brake hubs and check the emergency brake pad and spring return for wear. It could be hanging up when you put your foot on the brake and go in reverse. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
