my son got a free 96 lumina from his inlaws i hauled it home for him but it wont start(hence the free)battery is good,new starter,has fuel,but the problem is it wont turn over with key but will turn over but not run when you jump the starter,all lights work.any ideas?:banghead: i'm new here ,all help appreciated!

Welcome to AF, does the key you have have the chip init, does the security lite on the dash stay on?

yes it does have the chip and i read in another post to insert key and leave switch in the on position for 15 minutes,i tried that no luck security light blinks normally ty

Blinks normally is not normal it should go out after 3 seconds.

blinking is bad

wrong key or bad VATs or passkey issue

will run if this is resolved

sometimes you can remove the column upper cover and snip the small yellow or yellow striped wire from the key switch tumbler lock and it will start and run and be ok but the security light will be on permanently

it is one of three small wires from the key switch lock


but it works

done it many times in the past


or go and buy a bypass kit for remote start it will bypass this system also

this is an extremely common and troublesome issue with the 90s cars

it will prevent psark and fuel to the car unless a certain code is sent from the key or switch to the computer

and it is obviously not working anymore

we have a 98 achieva we had the same issue with and we gave up on it and i snipped the wire

and its been great for 2 years now
