My Jeep just died on us the other day.. we didn't run out of gas and know that it is getting fuel because we bypassed the filter. The AAA mechanic suggested it may be the ECM, so we replaced that but it still won't start. There is no spark going to the distributor. It turns over but never starts. It is a 1992 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 with about 157,000 miles on it. I bought the ECM at Autozone

thanks for any help

did you mean theres no spark comeing from the dist going to the plug? Id check the coil and the connectors going to the dist.

I mean't when I take the wire from the top of the dist cap off and put it close to the aluminum tap it clips on (about 1/2 inch away) and turn the ignition on and try and start it. I don't see the spark arc to the post it fits on.

Thanks for the help, this is stressing me out, I just inherited this truck and my mom had taken awesome care of it.

pull that wire from coil and see if you get spark there at coil . if so change wires. if not more testing will be needed. let us know

Is it the 4.0 liter? Then I'd suspect Crankshaft Position Sensor.

Also, check the thread in the FYI section, there is a thread about diagnosing a no start Cherokee....it's here (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=2209).

I pulled the wire off the distributor cap top and cranked the engine over a couple times. No spark

Before it died, did the engine ever misfire or did it ever shift oddly? Either of these can be a sign the CPS is going bad. No spark is one of the symptoms also.

the reason I am asking you to see if there is spark at coil is sometimes the coil wire goes bad and no spark will get to distr . you may well need cps but you should make sure you do things by the numbers start #1 #2 not #1 #8 #4 do simple first life gets easier. let us know if you have or dont have spark when coil wire is off and right at coil.

Dave you can also check for codes using check eng light. from ign off turn on then off then on then off then on leave on and count eng light flashes . If say you get one flash then pause then flash that= 11 which is no crank reference signal at PCM. 54 is no cam signal. 42 is auto shutdown relay control circuit. These are codes that pertain to your problem they may or may not be there but if there you have direction. good luck
