I have a 1988 Jeep Cherokee. When stopped at a light or stop sign the RPM's drop really really low and I can feel the engine trying not to die. Sometimes it does end up dying (a couple time in the last couple days it's actually died on me) any idea as to what the problem is?? Also it's started to run pretty hot, and sometimes the coolant boils out. And sometimes it takes a couple of trys to get it started. Please help?

I would address over heat problem since both problems may just be eng to hot to run correctly. you dont list your eng but I assume 4.0 straight 6. get a new thermostat maybe flush sys check hoses and if spongy change can colapes. If it still gets hot you may want to change clutch fan they get weak turn to slow and can cause over heat. also can be water pump or clog in radiator. But I would at least start with therm change. Luck be on your side, P/S very bad to run hot check your oil you may have burned some up by eng trying to stay cool

If it were me, I'd do the following things, in order, and see if they fixed the issue:

[I'd also check what ronaldk said]

Plugs, cap and rotor, spark plug wires. Air filter while you're at it. (if they haven't been done in the last 30000 miles). Clean the intake with intake cleaner.

Throttle position sensor.

Let us know how it goes.

Clean out the throttle body bore with carb spray and a rag, then pull out the iac valve and see if the pintle is sticking. You should be able to push it in and pull it out though its somewhat stiff. Replace it if it won't move. The tps should be .7v at closed throttle and the base throttle idle speed should be 750rpm. Set it by pulling the iac, extend the pintle and make sure it bottoms on reinstallation. Don't connect the wires yet. Start and adj the throttle stop to 750 if nec, then reconnect the iac wires. Shut it off for 30 secs and restart to reset the iac. You may have to repeat shutdown sequence 1 more time.
