Ferrari Testarossa 250 1958 MG Plus Models 1:12tony126c2 08-09-2009, 05:14 PM Is there life after the F40 project ? .......well indeed there is   The Lucybelle will be my next model. The picture shows the model which is assembled by the manufacturer. http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/100_3282.jpg I wonīt make the NART version but the version how it is currently in a private Swiss collection. This book by Douglas Nye gives me guidance http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0354.jpg Some pictures of the box and its contents http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0355.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0357.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0358.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0359.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0360.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0361.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0362.jpg The front part is nicely detailled with a separate engine but the aft part is one lumb of resin. I will open the trunklid and the doors and replace them with brass ones. http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0363.jpg The innerpart will be replaced by a tubular brass chassis, tank and sparewheel. http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0366.jpg Here is some reference http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0368.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0369.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0370.jpg And here are my drawings of the aft part http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/boven.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/zij.jpg A lot of plans :D regards Ton CrateCruncher 08-09-2009, 06:29 PM Alright Ton! You are welcome ! :licka: 250 Testa Rossa 08-12-2009, 01:46 AM 1/12th scale ? WHOA! I just finished my Hasegawa TR. MG Model Plus just released a 1/12th scale TR that Von Neumann ran at Riverside. tony126c2 08-14-2009, 07:58 AM After some consideration I decided to construct the aft chassis in brass instead of plastic tubing. Although plastic is better to work with, brass gives more strenght. I started with a brass bulkhead to have a solid connection point for the brass tubing. I also use the resin aft part for the right measurement as a kind of mould for the brass parts. http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0315%7E0.jpg Here you see one part already "moulded" http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0317%7E0.jpg The drawing I made is now a template for the bending of the brass tubing http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0319.jpg ...and the mould I use for dryfitting. After I soldered the beams I was not very satisfied: the diameter of the tube was to much ( I knew already:grinyes:) and the connection to the bulkhead was crappy. I removed everything and started all over with the new 6 mm tubing. In my second attempt I soldered a connection point ( made from a thinner tube) where I could slide the 6mm tube over the smaller one. It makes it much more easy to align the 6mm tube. http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0320.jpg This hazy picture shows the support. After bending, aligning and soldering I added a cross connection http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0322.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0323.jpg Next step is further making some reinforcements of the frame and making the axle. regards Ton F1Tommy 08-14-2009, 11:52 AM Converting an MG into a superdetailed model. Wow you are brave!! Can't wait to see your thread as it goes along. Consider this a scratchbuild(other than the body). Tom Tanner/Scale Designs/Ferrari Expo 2010 model/photo contest-Chicago April 2010 CrateCruncher 08-14-2009, 12:20 PM Nice start Ton! This is a very ambitious project, no doubt. tony126c2 08-14-2009, 12:43 PM @Tom: "brave" is my middle name :icon16: :icon16: It is my first time...we will see were we end. It is a great creation and a great model but the aft part is a definitely a minus so I will try and enhance it. @Mike: It is rather ambitious but I build it already in my head :) and every part fits :iceslolan So everything will be alright. grayfox2014 08-15-2009, 02:27 PM Great work. since your working over the back half of the frame I figured this sit would help with reference, I'm using it for my frame modifications. Great reference it is! tony126c2 09-17-2009, 05:46 PM Here is my next update. I stopped the work on the "hump" ( waiting for coppersmith tools etc.) and started the building of the V12 2953cc (Colombo) engine. These are the parts of the engine. Every is a bit rough but it gives a good opportunity for further detailling http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0331%7E0.jpg Here are the venturiīs added to the Weber carburettors and the casted bolts are replaced by pin heads. http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0334%7E0.jpg This is the result http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0336.jpg The lid will not close because the engine with trumpets is too high. The engine struts should be modified http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0339.jpg bolds are added http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0340%7E0.jpg Original parts are replaced by scratched parts because they donīt look like the real ones http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0342%7E0.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0344%7E0.jpg New parts are made http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0346%7E0.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0347.jpg And here is the complete engine http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0348.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0349.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0351.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0352%7E0.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0354%7E0.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0356.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0358%7E0.jpg I hope I am able you show a brass trunklid with hump next time :grinno: CrateCruncher 09-17-2009, 06:19 PM Finally! An update on the MG. I was beginning to think you were pulling our leg (kidding us) about working on that engine. Good outcome from a really rough looking set of parts you had to work with. I like your scratch work on the distributors. Your front waterlines look good too. I was trying to figure out how they connect into the radiator and your photo helped a lot. Mike M.S 09-17-2009, 06:53 PM Hi Tony Looks very nice from the engine, unfortunately, I have seen your building report until now. Here I have some photos by a 1:12 motor. http://www.autographmodel.com/Deutsch/Deutsch.htm I built him 2 years ago. You make you again very much work seems to be worthwhile. Greeting Martin rollin80s 09-17-2009, 07:31 PM that is one beautiful engine there. great, great work. tony126c2 09-18-2009, 07:28 AM @Mike I am quite satisfied, although the engine bloc is much to rough. Looking forward to see yours finished. @Martin This Autograph engine is a complete other league. It is in my stockpile too waiting to be put in the Revell GTO. Comparing to this one it is a smooth clean kit. @Rollin: thanks! tony126c2 09-29-2009, 11:11 AM After the engine the work on the "hump" had to start. A rather important job for me...considering I have never done it and some other projects were dependant of the success of my coppersmith skills. Among them is making in copper of the upper part of the 1:8 ARNO IX hydroplane with ferrari Engine http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/timossi6.jpg I started with a piece of copper (no brass because copper is more flexible) http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0359%7E0.jpg I quit after two attempts and started working with 2 half pieces of copper. After bending, shaping and coppersmithing I could solder both parts together http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0360%7E0.jpg and with coppersmith tools I shaped in its definitive form http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0361%7E0.jpg I was satisfied with this try out and confident in my coppersmith skills so I put the cutter in the resin. http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0362%7E0.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0363%7E0.jpg It wasnīt a sharp cut so I used a copper frame, screws and milliput (epoxy putty) http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0364%7E0.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0366%7E0.jpg after sanding etc. the trunk hole was ready http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0369%7E0.jpg here some fitting of the hump http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0371.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0372.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0373.jpg next step is finishing the trunk Ton grayfox2014 09-29-2009, 12:03 PM :eek2:wow everything looks truly fantastic. The detail on the engine and the work on the hump is amazing. I now know for a fact that im in last place out of the three of us. o well slow and steady. CrateCruncher 09-29-2009, 11:51 PM Nice progress Ton. Good solution for the hump dividing it in two like that. You probably already know this but copper hardens as its worked and has to be annealed periodically to restore ductility or it will crack. tony126c2 09-30-2009, 07:21 AM I now know for a fact that im in last place out of the three of us. o well slow and steady. @Steve, how is progress on your build? Until now you have achieved more than I do ! @Mike, thanks for the advice. Until now I did not have any cracks but now I know the way to avoid it. grayfox2014 09-30-2009, 12:35 PM My progress is moving about as fast as molasses in a blizzard. Working on the hinges and looking at get a HRM engine. Once I do those I'll put an update on here. Pascal D 10-11-2009, 11:47 AM Well, well, look what the cat dragged in !! Nice to see you here Ton. Greetings Pascal tony126c2 10-14-2009, 02:45 PM @ Pascal   we meet everywhere The lid of the trunk/boot is ready now. A book from 1893 and the books of Gerald Wingrove ( http://web.mac.com/gawingrove/iWeb/Home%20Page/Home%20Page%20.html) helped me a lot with the coppersmithing . http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0378.jpg First the copper (brass is to hard) is annealed so it becomes softer. The first shape I have done with my fingers. Than I put some "wrinkles" in the copper where a curve should come. With a small hammer the "wrinkles" are hammered out and this is repeated a several times with this result http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0379.jpg Here two parts are ready for soldering http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0380.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0381.jpg The lid is made out of brass http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0382.jpg And here you see old and new side by side http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0383.jpg The small lid in the hump will added later :D tony126c2 10-31-2009, 11:43 AM This is a rather time consuming project. Compared to the F40 project I now have to design and create every added part myself. :D Last 2 weeks I have been busy with remodelling the tubular chassis and the seats. On the picture you can see the (drawn) parts which I removed or modified. http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0384.jpg On the picture you see leather and foam which I planned to use for upholstery. But it looked awful, to much curves. So it was time for plan B: the paint and brush http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0387.jpg After giving it a first coat it looked much than the leather http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0388.jpg However the "leather" is too glossy, so it is matted and piping is added. http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0390.jpg The seats are ready and I am quite satisfied with the result The last picture show the aft part after demolishing the old tubular chassis and with the axle added. Now the resin is removed and I gave to model the differential http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0390a.jpg I removed the old chassis because it was to wide and the wheels hardly fitted regards Ton MidMazar 10-31-2009, 12:26 PM Cool progress on a not so often seen kit. Motor starting to look great. Also the copper hump is just perfect, great work. BTW that resin appears to be hella thick. tony126c2 10-31-2009, 01:34 PM Cool progress on a not so often seen kit. Motor starting to look great. Also the copper hump is just perfect, great work. BTW that resin appears to be hella thick. Yes the resin is very thick on the aft side of the car. In the front it is more subtle CrateCruncher 11-01-2009, 07:40 AM Nice progress Ton. Nice work on those seats. Whenever you get frustrated with the quality of this kit just remind yourself of all the great scratch-building skills your perfecting, :iceslolan. (a bit off-topic: Stefano Corsini is selling a white metal engine kit for your Arno project. A bit pricey but wow what an engine. He had full access to the real one when he made the patterns.) tony126c2 11-01-2009, 08:44 AM Nice progress Ton. Nice work on those seats. Whenever you get frustrated with the quality of this kit just remind yourself of all the great scratch-building skills your perfecting, :iceslolan. Mike, maybe I will do that :icon16: ...sometimes I just want to build a kit right from the box..no scratchbuilding, no starting over again and again a bit off-topic: Stefano Corsini is selling a white metal engine kit for your Arno project. A bit pricey but wow what an engine. He had full access to the real one when he made the patterns.) It is in my stack already for a couple months  I had a nice deal when I also bought the Porsche engine  This is one of projects I also like to do but...a lot of scratchwork as long as they donīt issue their transkit. But maybe my next project because that one is a nice straight build. I have seen the pictures on which the kit is based on ..........hundreds! Ton tony126c2 11-07-2009, 10:35 AM A little progress again ...this is a very slow project  This week I made the differential and removed the resin aft. The problem with the differential is that there is no decent reference material. The only pictures I found are these: the lowest is a picture of the real car, upper right is an earlier model and left is the Hiro model. http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0390b.jpg This is the base form of the diff. It will be divided so that I can put it on the brass axle. http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0391.jpg ready for assembly http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0395.jpg Here you can see the model where the resin has been cut away and the assembled diff http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0399.jpg I made a dry fit with the wheels http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0400.jpg you van see that there is little room to mount the suspension so there is something to think about :-? It will be my next challenge and also finishing the tubular chassis and mounting the gas tank Ton tony126c2 11-26-2009, 11:58 AM This is where we stopped last time. Here you can see the differential with wheels on the axle. http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0407.jpg There is little space for the springs between the wheels and the chassis..and this is the way it is solved. http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0408.jpg The springs are mounted on the inside now (without consent of Enzo 8) ) The springs wonīt keep the axle in place so we need some kind of device (really donīt know the name) http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0409.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0410.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0411.jpg Here all the parts are in place in a dryfit http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0412.jpg This the start of the gas tank. Base form is made out of balsa http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0413.jpg Here it is covered with aluminium http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0415.jpg ........and waiting for rivets. I ordered rivets which were to small (head .4 mm) http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0419.jpg Here you see the chassis for the interior http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0418.jpg Here it is placed. Also I installed the cover which is situated between the seat and the frame http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0420.jpg Next step in finishing the gas tank and the steering systeem. I donīt yet if I will make in steerable. Ton da_ashman 11-26-2009, 06:19 PM Simply amazing building, fantastic project!!!! Is the Swiss one the Silver with Burgendy one? The brass frame is still an option! :grinyes: Perseverance? Are you kidding??... you just spent like 2 years on the F40! You have plenty of perseverance!!!:) A brass frame would be a nice upgrade, though. You'd have to thin down the resin body, I'm sure, to keep things looking correct, which is what made me think of the copper body. Scale-wise, it would be very close to correct in thickness... but it makes a mountainous project out of this build... kind of like the F40, no? Garey dieteufel 11-28-2009, 02:13 PM Hi Ton ! Great work ! Fine scratchbuild details. Greetings Sascha tony126c2 11-28-2009, 05:53 PM you just spent like 2 years on the F40! The F40 was another piece of cake: it was a top high end assembly project...but hammering a new body is a major scratch build job where you have to "invent" everything yourself. Now I sometimes have big issues with myself abiut the current build ( yes you go on...no I stop...you go on ...I stop) a brass frame would be a nice upgradeBut not as part of the current kit but as a separate frame with engine, wheels, tank in the same display ! @Die Teufel: hi Sascha...small world :) Ton tony126c2 12-05-2009, 12:38 PM Some progress to show I replaced the default vertical firewall by a new one that is build on a tube frame http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0427.jpg Also the gas tank is ready now: here are the rivets assembled http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0428.jpg And here it is ready http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0434.jpg http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10860/DSC_0435.jpg Just some detailwork on the chassis and than I can paint it Ton vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
