geez. oil pressure absent

So we overheated and destroyed the head gasket. Took it apart, replaced gaskets, put it all back together. Drained the oil figuring that there was a bit of stuff in it with all the cleaning of the block to put the new gaskets on. Put new oil in it and started it up. Oil light doesn't turn off and there is a bit of a ticking sound. Any one have any ideas? I did check the oil pressure sending unit plug and wiring and couldn't find anything wrong with it. Do I need to replace the oil pump now? It was fine before.

Use a manual gage and verify oil pressure. The link is a picture of a test gage. http://www.autopart.com/tools/toolsmain/tool/T_2001.htm
If the pressure is actually low I would suggest cleaning the strainer its probably covered with trash.

Thanks I could use that on my Mazda too. We'll drop the oil pan and check that out. I guess we can probably check the condition of the pump at the same time......
