Torque converterPOWER247 08-03-2009, 12:55 PM I have a 99 Camry sedan 140k miles on it 2.2L I was driving up a small hill and the car couldn't make it up the hill from there & only goes on reverse what is wrong with it before I take it to the dealer? Not sure if its the converter or trans? jdmccright 08-03-2009, 01:15 PM Are there any warning lights on the instrument panel (check engine, flashing O/D)? Have you checked the fluid level? No forward movement at all indicates a serious problem, but make sure that all simple possibilities are covered first. Check the fluid to be sure it is full and looks good (a clear, reddish color is good...brown or opaque in color or burned smell is bad). Then borrow a OBD code scanner and retrieve any stored codes from the car's ECM. Post back what you find. POWER247 08-03-2009, 01:19 PM No code no smell & still red fluid jdmccright 08-03-2009, 02:02 PM Chances are it won't be something you can fix yourself. Valve body work is possible since it doesn't involve removing the transaxle, but best left to professionals to get good, quality, and usually warranted work. Dowload the repair manual associated with your gen Camry's (Gen IV) transmission and follow the troubleshooting section to help pinpoint the problem. Call around to some reputable shops describing your problem and what the tests seem to indicate to get some rough order quotes. Then have the car towed to a competent transmission shop for their assessment and repair. POWER247 08-03-2009, 02:13 PM I wasn't trying to fix it myself I just wanted to know witch part could be wrong so I won't be a sucker when they go and say its the whole engine plus I need fresh air in my tires so my car can float better but thank's for the info jdmccright 08-03-2009, 02:46 PM No problem, always better to be well-informed when butting heads with some of those guys. If I had to guess, one of the forward clutches has failed in the transaxle, which would require either a rebuild or replacement. You might have been warned by a gradual sluggishness or reduced fuel economy as those clutches slip. If it started this all of a sudden, it may be electrical such as a broken controlling wire. Good luck and please post back with what you/they found out. quick69gto 08-03-2009, 07:09 PM We have a 2.2L/auto '99 Camry in our fleet with close to 200,000 miles on it. I just got finished installing it's third transmission. Possible week point on these cars? jdmccright 08-10-2009, 11:03 AM Possibly, but then again, fleet vehicles tend to not get such good treatment from their drivers who know it isn't their own car. And if it's underpowered, it tends to get wrung out even more. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
