Hope someone can help, I recently changed the timing belt on this contour, before the replacement the car ran fine, after the replacement the idle is very high and if you accelerate it takes a few seconds for the idle to return to normal. Also if the car is driven for extended periods of time it acts like it wants to die. The car also idles rough when the air breather is off. does anyone have a clue what might be going on? Could the timing being off cause it to act like this? any help would be appreciated.

by the way no CEL's

Welcome to AF!

Sure sounds like the timing is advanced too much. I'm afraid you're going to have to take it apart again and check the timing marks on the camshaft and crankshaft pullies.

Well I replaced the IAC and that seemed to solve the Problem. The baffles on the inside of the IAC were messed up and had a hole in them. Hope this helps someone else.

What is IAC so I can tell me husband, I think this maybe what is wrong w/ my daughters car. We also changed the timing belt. Her car started stalling all the time, so we changed the alternator and thought that would fix the problem but it didn't. Did your car die also? Or just have the idle problem?

Hi the IAC is the Idle Air Control it is located on the back of the engine under the intake manifold. It is not that hard to change, it is held on by two bolts and has an electrical connector going to it. Sorry I dont have any pictures, but if you search this sight you might be able to come up with some. Or you can try contour.org they may have some. My car did not die it just idled real high. You might try the throttle position sensor (tps) it is located right on the throttle body and is help on by two cross tip screws. Hope this helps.
