Hello AF,

My name is Eric. I've been lurking on AF for quite a while now, I have learned many tips and techniques from you all. Big thanks!! Now it's time for me to contribute and show my WIP.

Before I show you the pics, let me tell you a little bit about my modeling experience. The first model car that I built was about 7 or 8 years ago. It was a Revell Ford F-150 Harley Davidson Edition. It did not turn out very well so I ended up throwing it away. I then started working model cars again about 2 years ago when a friend of mine bought me an Mitsubishi Evo IX. But due to my busy schedule with school and work, I had to put it away after working on it for about a month.

Now that I have graduated, I have time again to work on the Evo IX. However, while I was browsing the web one day, I came across a picture of the Audi R8 PPI Razor GTR, and at the exact moment, I knew I had to build one. So once agian, the IX was put back in the box.

Anyways, enough of my blabbering. Here are the pics of the R8 PPI.

Due to my limited abilities and supplies, the model will not be exactly the same, it will be modified a bit. :licka:

I started widening the wheel wells using styrene.

I then filled the gap in between the strips with milliput and added the wide body.

A little feedback please. Positive or negative, bring it. :runaround:

As I'm working on such a project (a personal view of a GT concept R8 I still have to go on to put something here) I'm very interested in seeing your progress. The original R8 inspiring you is really nice, but I still can't identify "PPI", can you please explain us what it is exactly ?
Do you have more pics of that car ?

thanks for coming here to share this build ! I'll closely follow it.

Nice to see not oob builds being built. Seems like you have a challenge up a head of you with the sideskirts, hood, and rest of body parts. The widebody is coming out good.

Time for an update.

I opened up the hood for the vent.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/jetboy2004/Audi%20R8/SDC10132.jpg

Completely opened. Now the question is, how do I keep it open? The hood is very thick, it does not bend at all. If I just putty it, I don't think it'll be strong enough to hold it. I tried to scribe a line on the underside, it didn't work.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/jetboy2004/Audi%20R8/SDC10135.jpg

I didn't like how the headlight sits very deep inside, it just didn't look very realistic.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/jetboy2004/Audi%20R8/P6290026.jpg

So I moved it out.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/jetboy2004/Audi%20R8/P6290027.jpg

Here's a comparison.

That's it for now. More comments please. :icon16:

Looking good. Be sure to check fitment of the lens for the headlight before attaching it permanently. As for the hood. I would do one of two things. Either completely remove that section and re-attach it where it angles down just a bit for the effect that you are looking for. Or, Use some styrene or something as a spacer. Then carefully use a bit of heat followed by cold water to heat the back part of the vent, then use the cool water to help it retain its new position. USE EXTREME CAUTION, if you have any reservations or fears about using the heat DO NOT do it. You can quickly turn what is looking to be a great creation into a pile a goo in a matter of seconds.

Using the heat method can work, but its risky. I would completely cut the hood vent out and then use the heat method on it to curve it in the position you want. Then cut out some sides out of styrene. Glue eveything back and then putty. Good luck.

Don't worry, I thought about the lens before I started modifying the light. Now the lens and the light actually look like one piece. And for the hood, I think I will go with the first option. I don't trust my skills with fire. Thanks for the tip!

Another update.

I will use these wheels, Pegasus Vantage 2201. They will be painted black. Do you think it will have a black chrome look if I just spray clear black over it?

Looks good so far, but watch out: Your way of widening the fenders by gluing some layers of sheet in the wheel wells made them also smaller in diameter. The Pegasus wheels fit, but caused by the styrene the car sits higher now (look at the side skirts). Will you change that?

The wheel wells were not made any smaller. I took a 4mm wide styrene piece and glued it to the bottom of the wheel wells and then built my way up. It's actually not under the wheel wells, it's on the outside. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures to show the front, but in the picture below, you can see what I'm talking about in the rear wheel well. I widened the circled part.

The car is sitting higher because the Pegasus wheels are too big. That's why I'll have to extend the bumpers and side skirts a bit lower to compensate it.

Ok, now I see: you glued on strip along the wheel well and some more from the outside against the fender. Great idea.

What wheels will you take?

Your putty work looks really good! How did you make sure the yellow putty forms the shape close to the wheel well arc? You are right...those wheels look huge, how big are those wheels? Wouldn't the paint not hold up very well (nor look very even) if you paint clear black on it? I have only seen things like testors window tint and tamiya X19 that looks only remotely like clear black, and I am guessing it would take an enormous layer of paint to make it appear black chrome. If it's me I would have done something like enamel gloss black + a light coat of alclad II chrome.

With those issues aside, my opinion is that flat black wheels look much better on this car.

I wouldn't spray black over the chrome, might run into problems. I would do what kaho suggested. Good luck.

Hello,

first thing, thanks for the link to PPI. I must admit I didn't know them...

I also think as Micha that your car will stand a bit to high... That's the problem with the addition of new bigger wheels.
On my build I enlarge the wheels wells before putting styren lines and putty not to have to put some irealistic very high side skirts. But I also worked on them to match the extended wheels wells.

(BTW your work made me feel like going on, so I think I'll start a thread soon, even if I sweared not to open one I couldn't finish - I used to bump from a project to another, too many things to do...)

Personaly I'm not a big fan of these wheels (a bit too much "tuned" effect on a sport car), they look really too big and I'm not sure that black or chrome will give one a better look than the other.
But it's your choice so let see what it finally gives at the end.

for the hood I remade the part cut off in styren and putty. not sure if it was the best choice but I didn't want to bend the thick revell plastic.

Anyway you're on the good way, very interesting build and I'm sure the result will be great.

Thanks, that's exactly what I did. I want to use the Aoshima Volk CE28n's. But I cannot find them anywhere. I might just have to stick with the Pegasus wheels that I have.

The yellow is actually not putty, it's a piece of styrene. I wish my putty work could be that nice. The wheels are 22" according to Pegasus' website, I just wish they were a tad smaller. I have testors window tint spray, but I have yet to test it on the wheels. I might give them a try, if they don't turn out nice, I'll just strip the chrome and paint them gloss black. I don't have an air brush so alclad wouldn't work for me.

Thanks, I might test the clear black on the chrome parts that are not visible, ie under the tire. If I'm not satisfied with the result, I'll just strip it and paint it gloss black.

Thanks rallymaster, I didn't think about enlarging the wheel wells, but from initial guesses, it'll probably lead to other problems because the fenders will be smaller. It's too late for me to do that anyways, I'll just have to work with what I have now. The stance of the car really bothers me now. I agree with you, the oversized side skirt would not look real. :banghead: I guess I really need to get my hands on a set of the Aoshima Volk CE28n rims.

The styrene is a big garage sale sign that I bought from Wal-Mart for 97 cents. The putty I used is Milliput. Good luck on your R8!

Thank you. The idea for the fenders sort of just popped out when I was planning, which I really didn't plan for that long. I guess that's the reason why I'm stuck on the side skirts. I tried two different ways but neither were satisfying. So now it's back to the drawing board.
