07 vw passat burning lots of oil, no leaks external?

is it my imagination, I put in 4 quarts since my last oil change 4000 miles ago.

VW's burn some oil, but that is a bit much. See your dealer. They will put you on a time table for oil consumption. You may also have sludge. Again, see your dealer.
