serpentine belt slipping / plus noise - 1998 GScbc58 06-22-2009, 10:38 AM I have a noise coming from one of the pullys/connections where the serpentine belt runs. With the car running I can't pin point exactly which pully it's coming from. Is there a way to do this... figure out which one it's coming from? I noticed that for some reason the belt is slipping off of a couple of pullys. Is this something that I can fix myself or do I need to take it in? I do have a Haynes manual but the pictures don't match up to my GS in terms of the tensioner. Tks in advance. HotZ28 06-22-2009, 11:31 AM Evidently you have a bearing failing in one of the idler, or tensioner pulley’s. Loosen, and set aside both serpentine belts and check each one of the pulley bearings by hand. This would also a good time to check for any loose motion in the SC & water pump pulley's. The pic below shows the pulley locations, & numbers with belt routing. http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/8757/pulleyspd1.jpg cbc58 06-22-2009, 12:08 PM [COLOR=black][FONT=Verdana]Evidently you have a bearing failing in one of the idler, or tensioner pulley’s. Thank you so much for the pic. How do I loosen the belts?? (and then re-tighten them again?) is this done via the tensioner pulleys? I'm somewhat handy but don't want to screw things up. Tks. I'm somewhat handy but don't want to screw things up. Tks.Yes, the tensioner is spring loaded to keep the proper tension on the belts and you may need a long-handled ratchet (with the correct size socket) to release the tension, then you can slide the belts off of the pulley. If you find some worn pulley bearings, you will have to remove the pulley retaining bolt to replace the pulley. These are left-hand threads, so be careful and turn them clockwise to remove. Same applies (in reverse order) when installing the pulley's & belts. Be sure to check pulley #9 :crying: cbc58 06-22-2009, 04:22 PM Thank you.........again. cbc58 06-24-2009, 07:02 AM I have one more question: can the supercharger belt tensioner itself be tightened? The guy at autozone says no... you have to buy a whole new unit. Is he right or is there a way to tighten the spring inside? HotZ28 06-24-2009, 07:39 AM The SC tensioner is spring loaded and not adjustable. Is the belt loose with tension applied? If so, it may help to lubricate the tensioner spring housing with PB-blaster. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
