'86 nsr500 wipSeventyseven 06-16-2009, 06:06 AM Here is my battle with the 1986 Rothmans Honda NSR500. I love this bike but will never build another (after the Moriwaki....) because I have struggled to find detailed photo's of the real one. But, I am happy to try... http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2460/3630507371_8d99a6c417_o.jpg Chassis so far, I was a bit goofy with the putty/syringe style of welds, ignore the pin holding the chain! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3593/3630507011_a954bfb481_o.jpg Bare motor with use of my favourite detailing tool, a PENCIL!! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3656/3631322116_a4206fe284_o.jpg Trying to be realistic with expansion chambers, again, pencil. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3611/3630506645_e69b410d38_o.jpg Speedy modelling with new mufflers, aluminium tube, with soldering wire as the bent tip (with hole drilled in) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2458/3631321782_8335736e5e_o.jpg Mesh I found from a blown-up kettle (don't laugh, I scrounge!) wrapped around kit filters, I will cut around the edge to make loverly ones! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3664/3631321618_0c07e78e2c_o.jpg Sneaky quick look at the chain, still working on it. Hopefully the bike will look like it finished a tough second place! (Lawson or Spencer probably won!) thank you. Seventyseven 06-16-2009, 06:08 AM Sorry about the attachments! some reason it wont let me insert image's, will figure it out soon. .............OK, fixed. Twowheelsrule 06-16-2009, 08:01 PM Looks like excellent work so far! I never thought to use colored pencils on motorbike good idea! TW Seventyseven 06-16-2009, 09:17 PM Thanks! I use standard 'HB' pencil to highlight small parts like bolts or weld lines etc... it gives a 'natural' metallic shine. joelwideqvist 06-17-2009, 08:49 AM great start! Let's see more! /Joel Roca46 06-17-2009, 05:12 PM As Joel said, great start! I like that effect you have done with the pencil!. Waiting for more pictures. Roca. cR@Zy!NgLi$h 06-19-2009, 05:36 AM Thanks! I use standard 'HB' pencil to highlight small parts like bolts or weld lines etc... it gives a 'natural' metallic shine. Man, that's awesome! Can you elaborate? Or maybe even do a tutorial? :iceslolan robrex 06-19-2009, 07:53 AM Nice start, I'll be watching for more updates. I also like the pencil tip! rollin80s 06-19-2009, 07:51 PM Man, that's awesome! Can you elaborate? Or maybe even do a tutorial? :iceslolan dittoo^^^ i too would like to know, i kind of have an idea. but would like to be sure it would work..looks awesome so far. :iceslolan Seventyseven 06-19-2009, 10:07 PM Thankyou, everyone! A quick few shots and notes on what I'm trying to do, as for the pencil thing, just go nuts! love it! I also use powder graphite from art supplies stores, and simply brush on (can be messy!) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2436/3642096195_aff5983170_o.jpg Check out those horrible welds! HRC would fire me! will for now on use the heat-stretched plastic texturing method for welds! Here I have chosen to use wound guitar string for exhaust springs. Will use wire to make 'U' clips for them to mount onto. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2435/3642902802_4140bd07d6_o.jpg What a great set! A must for anyone. The blue wire will be used for the Ignition leads. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3646/3642903060_ea85ba3536_o.jpg A closer look at said wire, this stuff is for jewellery making. From 'Spotlight' for the locals (Robrex). http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3325/3642902908_2659e9925f_o.jpg Same wire but silver, for brake lines. Hopefully soon I will show some shots of the bike! not just parts! (I have children) The plan is to make the bike look well raced and worn (I think I found out why Wayne Gardner did not win the 1986 championship, must have used my bike, haha! Roca46 06-22-2009, 03:09 AM Great idea the guitar sting!! I hope to see the result. Keep the good progress! Roca. joelwideqvist 06-22-2009, 02:38 PM Great idea on the guy holding the parts :-) /Joel Seventyseven 07-02-2009, 10:35 PM Quick update, also waiting for my copy of 'Pitwalk Photo' book of '80s NSR500. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3645/3683530736_e14b855d2e_o.jpg Front wheel so far, not real happy with disc's wish I got the photo etch set. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3623/3683530852_30313fc27c_o.jpg Rear wheel, with 'post-race' grubby-ness. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2591/3683530990_18fd7e3e64_o.jpg Mock-up of swing arm, yet to finish details. Let me know of any thoughts and ideas! Thanks! Roca46 07-03-2009, 03:35 AM That disc and tyre are fantastic! You should be happy with the front disk :grinyes: I have an idea... I didn't used it before but maybe if you apply smoke from tamiya or black diluted over the white tyre letters... that may be more real because if it is 'post-race' I doubt that the letters just keep white as any new tyre. Bye!! Roca. racer93 07-03-2009, 09:28 AM That disc and tyre are fantastic! You should be happy with the front disk :grinyes: I have an idea... Bye!! Roca. One that I found that works even better than the tamiya smoke is the real cheap flat black acrylics thinned out heavily. It makes the lettering look really yellowed. Also works well for the realism of CF. But, that's another thread... A question about your "pencil" technique. Do you just brush on powder graphite, or do you use an actual pencil to do shadowing? Is this in place of a wash, or in addition to? I like the results, but would like to know more before I attempt it... Also, wouldn't the rear mudguard have been CF? They were using that back in the mid 80s in F1, so i imagine MotoGP (or whatever it was called back then) was using it as well... Daniel Seventyseven 07-03-2009, 10:05 AM I use pencil on the 'edges' or 'raised' areas, much like dry-brushing. Try on old painted parts, with both pencil and graphite on your finger tip! Mud guard! good point! I have old dodgy photo's of this bike, but soon to have the 'pit walk photo book' in the mail, so if it's CF, then I'll fix it! racer93 07-03-2009, 10:27 AM I use pencil on the 'edges' or 'raised' areas, much like dry-brushing. I have old dodgy photo's of this bike, but soon to have the 'pit walk photo book' in the mail, so if it's CF, then I'll fix it! Thanks, I'll definitely try it. Remember that when CF was first used it's REALLY difficult to see. I've been thinking of trying one of the older bikes, but the lack of reference photos (for most any model these days) is killing me. Aaaarrggghh! :runaround: Daniel Seventyseven 07-20-2009, 11:35 PM Woo-hoo! found time to work! http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2440/3740908633_644256bcdb_o.jpg Swingarm fitted to Chassis, will add final details when motor is fitted, like brake components painted, wired up etc....hey! the fender is CF! but like said, is very hard to notice, will spray subtle CF (not decal). http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3472/3741701632_df9afe4e4d_o.jpg Went to all the trouble of fitting a chrome shaft in the shock, will probably wont be able to see it! Must also finish paint/details to it. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3478/3741701204_30ff5db492_o.jpg Thin cut masking tape for coolant plumbing, will paint matt black then dry-brush w/grey then add hose clamps, should look great? http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3244/3741701014_34a1bdbeac_o.jpg Added black artist chalk to white lettering for raced look, happy! See you in a few more months! joelwideqvist 10-15-2009, 02:40 AM Looking rough and well raced! Take your time! /J cinqster 10-15-2009, 11:53 AM Very nice job. Not wanting to stray of the topic but some of the thicker guitar wires are perfect for electrical wires for the Airfix 1/12 Bentley 4.5. Yes, I know it's very specific but it's the most accurate replica part I ever seen. You can see the wire with the spiral wrap here: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2435/3950887281_2c0aa17546.jpg:wink: vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
