Welcome to AF

There is a metal pipe with rubber hose on each end that connects to the heater core, runs along the back of the engine and over to the drivers side end of the intake manifold. These metal pipes are known to rust out over time (especially where the retaining brackets are welded to them) causing a coolant leak where you describe.

Niomi probebly nailed it.

the way they rout the exhaust on 3.3 and 3.8 the drivers side rear head casting plugs like to rust out. you have to pull the exhaust pipe and I think the EGR pipe to get to it. But you can see the wet spot without removing anything. If my memory is correct there is a 1” plug and then the other hole has one of two sizes that is like 7/8” or 15/16” just buy all three that way you wont get stuck going back. They price is 35 cents to $1.00 each and you can take them back for a refund. And the Parts guy should tell you the sizes.

a drill and a small dent puller save a lot of time compaired to just banging and prying with a screw driver. clean clean clean when you tap the new one back in.
By the way, why do they call them freeze plugs when they are casting plugs?

And what on earth is a Hot water heater?

with the lack of anti - freeze in your rad the water would eventually freeze in the block .
With the core plugs the freezing water has an escape route ( they pop out ) instead of cracking the block do to the expansion of ice , hence the name freeze plugs .

Ok so what the "truck" is a hot water heater? and how come my 69 VW bug with a corvair six banger for a motor has freeze plugs . I just looked under the bonnet and could fine freezey plugs, but could not fine a radiator? There is a little thing that looks like a heater core but that darn thing has this brown/black liquid in it that smells just like motor oil?
Does 15W- 40 freeze?
:-)

The core plugs also will help during overheat and supposed to help from blowing your gaskets.
and that cooler you found is an oil / trans oil cooler
