I have a 2007 Hyundai Elantra GLS auto-transmission, front-wheel drive with 46,000 miles on it. The rear driver's side wheel starts making screeching noises after being driven about 30 miles without stopping; it makes the noise no matter what the speed. However, it does not make the noise while in a turn. In stopping, I checked the tire--the rim was hot. At home, when I tried to take the tire off, I had to kick it high, then low several times to get it to come loose so I could remove it from the hub; I could not see any visible problems with the brakes, but did not take them apart. Any ideas as to what this could be?

Rear wheel drum brakes or discs? If it is drum, it could be the stuck hand brakes. Next time it is making the noise and hot, jack it up the rear wheel and try to turn the wheel with your hand. If does not turn, you know for sure something (very likely brake) is holding up the wheel. Drum brake job is for seasoned mechanics, I would not recommend for inexperienced. Take it to a shop or dealer.
