I have one lug nut on one of my wheels that absolutely refuses to let go. And it just spins round and round. If anyone has had this happen to them please let me know how you went about fixing it. Thanks.

you can use a torch to cut it off but you may damage the rim, you might want to try nut splitter, can get one at autozone. Either way you will want to replace the stud. also you might want to try a small side grinder. I think this would be the easiest.

Jack the car up off the ground where the bad lug nut/stud is (use a jack stand). Take off the other 3 good lug nuts that do work, Spray a small amount of WD 40 on the Bad lug nut and stud. Then have someone help you out by pulling outward on the Tire/Rim (Pulling straight out with a decent amount of force) while you turn the ratchet and attempt to get the lug off. Dont pull the rim sideways and bend it, you can hand start one of the good lugnuts on a little bit on the stud straight across from the bad stud if you cant keep the Rim straight while pulling, This will prevent the rim from being pulled sideways also.......This process somtimes causes the lugnut to bite on the bad lug and start coming off while pressure is exerted on it. If it shows no sign of even budging after this.......Rent the nut spliter from autozone and crack it off, then replace both the lug and stud (Autozone has them). The stud can be punched out of the back of the spindle or pressed out with a special tool. Heat the stud up 1st, then spray some PB Blaster on it and let it set from 10 min and it will come out easier when you start pounding or pressing it out. You Could also just take the car to a good tire shop and they will most likely have the tools and know how to get the nut off with out bending/damaging the rim, and probably not charge much to do it? The moral of this whole story is: It sound like someone overtightened the lug nut and stripped it. The torque specs on the Geo Metro lugnuts is only about 55-60 Ft lbs.........Not a 100 Ft lbs like most larger cars.

all good ideas. if you decide to grind as a last resort, try grinding only one side of the nut first without hitting the rim. put some tape on the rim as a telltale that you've gotten too close. try to make a flat just down to the threads. this will usually loosen the grip on the stud, allow penetration of oil and the heat of grinding will often break any corrosion. the stud will need replacing anyway. 45lbs is important on these tiny bolts.

Thanks Woodie! I'm on the road right now and no copy of my files on my home PC. The point is the same though flashlight (And I cant stress this enough).............Use a torque wrench when tightening the lug nuts on these cars! I've seen Metro rims where the lugnut had actually cut thru the mounting hole in the rim because it was overtorqued.....:headshake

if those suggestions don't work, just pull the drum off with the wheel still attached. then you'll be able to grind or chisel it off from the inside. Good luck

If you ever go to a Pull & Save, grab as many LUG NUTS as you can put in your pocket.

I have many EXTRA lug nuts for all my cars.

They often get rusty inside if not lubricated.

I also put axle grease on all my lug bolts (and inside the nuts) when I change tires in the winter.

They won't ever get stuck - unless you reef on them as GM Rat Line says.

If a woman is driving the car and she ever has a flat and if she is willing to TRY
to put the spare on, the Lug Nut will come off easily for her.

They won't corrode into one solid unit like yours may have.

And BTW - I have never ever had a lug nut come off after using grease on it....
