Any other way to read the engine codes?Jmrec100 06-03-2009, 04:47 PM My car is displaying alot of problems. And its engine light is on. I used to be able to "borrow" a code reader from the local Autozones. Now they don't loan it. At nearly $200 , OUCH! Any other way to read it? Local shops can check the codes but Id have to drive the car and it just isn't doing well. Don't want to cause more damage. wrenchboss26 06-03-2009, 05:59 PM what year is your car toddman67 06-03-2009, 06:42 PM OBD II code readers can be purchased for under $70 at advance auto and it sounds as if you should purchase one. The codes are not a fluke and should have the repairs done before erasing them. If you have an older car pre-95 you could remove the ECU fuse to get rid of them, However you still need to fix the problems. Year, make, engine and codes would help if you need assistance. Jmrec100 06-04-2009, 02:47 PM Thanks. Mine is a 2.2L 1999 Cavalier. I checked with Autozone and they told me like $199. Im checking with Harbor Freight Tools. But I'll check other places like Pep Boys, Kragen, or even WalMart. Thanks again toddman67 06-04-2009, 05:43 PM A quick check at Harbor Freight shows that they have a couple of readers for $40 & $60, Cen-Tech. They also carry a cheaper one but I'm not sure if you could clear codes with it. Good luck. Jmrec100 06-04-2009, 07:02 PM Thanks. Just bought one. $60 on sale. Now to see whats wrong. I asked this because of the problems I have. The Post: Sounds like a Lawnmower describes it. And the resulting codes. I need to find out what's going on.
