It's not the transmission fluid or the gear selector. It's the clutch.

I'm assuming the brake/clutch reservoir was very low on fluid when you filled it. It most likely got some air in the system. This is why the clutch won't function. You can't get it to shift into gear while the engine is running because the clutch isn't releasing. You need to bleed the slave cylinder down at the clutch to get the air out. You can do this by:

1. Fill the reservoir and don't let it get too low on fluid while you are bleeding the clutch.
2. Open the bleed valve on the slave cylinder.
3. Have someone pump the clutch until the air bubbles stop coming out of the bleeder.
4. Don't let the reservoir get too low on fluid.
5. When a solid stream of brake fluid appears w/o any bubbles tell your assistant to hold the pedal to the floor.
6. Close the bleeder valve.
7. Push pedal. Does the clutch arm move? Check to see if it will go into gear. If not, bleed system again.
