03 Envoy 4.2L belt noisewashind 05-25-2009, 10:39 AM For 2 months there has been a high pitch jet-like whine from the front of the engine. I changed the PS dark fluid and it seemed to help but not much. When the A/C cycles the noise changes but stays present - even when its turned off. I changed the idler pulley & belt but no change to the sound. If I had to guess which side, I'd say the driver side and don't really suspect the belt tensioner pulley. I'm quite concerned that it may be the A/C compressor (clutch) and would appreciate hearing any advice especially repair options. Thanks...Dave maxwedge 05-25-2009, 01:26 PM First confirm is is an accessory/belt driven component, remove the belt see if it stops. washind 05-25-2009, 01:38 PM Yes, the noise stops when I remove the belt. When I spin all other pulleys, the water pump has a quiet high pitched noise that seems to get louder the faster I spin it (although I can't spin it too fast). The water pump bearing seems tight (no play). The A/C clutch seems ok, but when I spin the pulley behind it, it has a low pitched growl (which I suspect is normal). I suppose a can of water pump lubricant might be in order or perhaps I should just change the pump? Thanks ..Dave maxwedge 05-25-2009, 04:27 PM The ac pulley should not growl, sounds like the front bearing is bad. Without hearing or feeling this it is all guess work from here,, the w/pump seal can make a slight rubbing noise as you spin it, could be either one. I assume the fan clutch is not locked up? washind 05-25-2009, 04:39 PM The fan clutch is free and seems to operate normally. Given the high cost of repair if it's the compressor I think I'll keep driving for a while to let it get a little worse to eliminate any further doubt. Thanks again...Dave maxwedge 05-25-2009, 08:46 PM That ac bearing can be replaced seperately remember vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
