Burning oil help 22rewickedlowss 05-19-2009, 06:46 PM My truck has about 20,000 miles on a 95 22re rebuild when i bought it, it burns oil on start up and when u accelerate, there is oil on the threads of the spark plugs and fouls them out, im not sure if it is the valve seals or rings, is there any way to tell with the head off, the cylinders look really good nice cross hatch pattern. thanks jdmccright 05-20-2009, 11:14 AM A compression test can help find out where the leak is...disconnect the coil wire, pull the plugs, install the compression test gauge and crank it. Read the gauge then squirt about 1 tbsp of oil into the piston and retest. If compression improves, then it is the rings...otherwise, it's the stem seals. If you're seeing rough idle and smoky exhaust mostly from cold startup, my guess would be valve stem seals. Hope this helps! fourwd1 05-20-2009, 07:23 PM My truck has about 20,000 miles on a 95 22re rebuild when i bought it, it burns oil on start up and when u accelerate, there is oil on the threads of the spark plugs and fouls them out, im not sure if it is the valve seals or rings, is there any way to tell with the head off, the cylinders look really good nice cross hatch pattern. thanks Sit the head on some newspaper and pour some motor oil around the valve stems (just like it would pool around them when you shut off the engine). Then wait and see if it leaks thru, just like it would on the engine. wickedlowss 05-21-2009, 04:48 PM I pulled a couple of the valve and the valve guides were broke off... guess that could be a problem.....:shakehead fourwd1 05-21-2009, 09:35 PM Yeah vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
