Dino 246 'Daytona' insert seats.Cheesey153 05-14-2009, 08:23 PM So far I've built half a dozen (mostly) out of the box builds but I also have a long-term 'on again, off again' project of a Fujimi Enthusiast Dino 246 GTS. My aim for this project is to build the most perfect Dino that my abilities will allow - all the time learning more automotive modelling skills along the way! I've done a few bits to the kit so far but I thought it might be fun to share what I've done with the seating. The kit seats represent the standard Dino seats, and don't represent them especially well. I thought it would be nice for my model to have the optional 'Daytona' insert seats. I figured that the kits seats were 'OK' as a starting point but with all the effort to convert them to a) the correct shape and b) the correct pattern inserts, I may just as well scratchbuild new seats. I suppose my approach my be unconventional but I'm simply happier working with epoxy putty than I am with styrene and other materials. Resin casting has occured to me but looking at reference photos of the real car I see that very often the driver's and passenger's seat have slightly different appearances due, I suppose, to one seat always being sat upon and the other one only sometimes being sat upon! The seat inserts have 'squidged' and slipped to differing degrees on the real car and I wanted to show that difference on my kit too. Besides, I once tried resin casting and failed miserably and it's more of a challenge to make 2 seats, so make 2 seats is what I chose to do. The kit head restraints were incorrect too but I was able to easily convert them to the correct shape. As you can see, there's still a long way to go on one of the seats, and the other one still has detail to be added. Due to the 'on again, off again' nature of this build I'll finish then as & when I am inspired to work on them. I hope the photos adequately explain what I've done. Moderators: If you feel this thread is inappropriate please move, modify or delete as neccessary - after all, it's not a WIP of a car, just a pair of seats! Most were 246 GTS's, but a few GT's were made with the option according to several sources. Most also had the special wider wheels with a different design. Those will be alot of work if you decide to do them. Good luck!! Your seats look great so far. Tom Tanner/Scale Designs/Ferrari Expo/Strictly 43rd revival 2010-Chicago Cheesey153 05-14-2009, 08:39 PM Yes, I'd love to do the flares too but building those Campagnolo wheels is WAY beyond my ability! I've seen plenty of photos of non-flared Dinos with Daytona seats (maybe retro-fitted?) and I'll be content for my model to represent one of them. tuned.by.twenty 05-14-2009, 09:07 PM You make it look way too easy. I can't wait to see a set of these inside a model. jla 05-14-2009, 11:12 PM Wow, those are really nice. If you do end up casting them I would seriously be interested in a set. Oh watch out when you mold in the lower section of the nose to the body, it makes it a really tight fit later on. jano11 05-15-2009, 04:03 AM Yes, I'd love to do the flares too but building those Campagnolo wheels is WAY beyond my ability! I've seen plenty of photos of non-flared Dinos with Daytona seats (maybe retro-fitted?) and I'll be content for my model to represent one of them. Great job on the seats, they look very realistic! Do you have pictures of these Campagnolo wheels you are talking about. i'd like to take a look to them, maybe I can help you out. Cheesey153 05-15-2009, 09:06 AM Thanks for your comments chaps. jla: When i mentioned resin casting I didn't mean casting in perhaps the way you think. I meant I considered scratchbuilding just one seat and then home casting the second one (or at least part of it) for use in my model. jano: Here's an image of the Dino Campagnolo, taken from ferraris-online.com How on earth would anyone even begin to build a 1/24 version of this??!! http://www.cheesey153.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/campag.jpg rollin80s 05-15-2009, 01:12 PM jano: Here's an image of the Dino Campagnolo, taken from ferraris-online.com How on earth would anyone even begin to build a 1/24 version of this??!! http://www.cheesey153.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/campag.jpg[/QUOTE] with a lot of patience and insanity pills! :iceslolan :screwy: jano11 05-15-2009, 01:57 PM Hi, I'm working on project for a 1/24 model. I create 3D parts using a software and I'm going to have them 3D printed in a couple of weeks. If you really want those wheels I can add them to my order and have them for you. I'll only need pictures of the wheel from the right angles and the dimensions (the dimensions of the tires you will use on the rims would be the best ones). PS: The rims can also be made by hand but it would take more time and patience, however it isn't impossible if you build all the simple parts first and than put them all together. jano: Here's an image of the Dino Campagnolo, taken from ferraris-online.com How on earth would anyone even begin to build a 1/24 version of this??!! http://www.cheesey153.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/campag.jpg F1Tommy 05-15-2009, 02:32 PM If you make them you can probably sell a few to the guys who bought Studio 27 decals to make the Lemans 1972 NART Dino 246. I know how hard it can be. I did the old Alfa T33 wheels for my GTAM and T33/2 models. The Gunze wheels are all wrong. Every tiny oval hole had a lip that had to be duplicated. It took alot of time!! Tom Tanner/Scale Designs/Ferrari Expo-Strictly 43rd revival 2010-Chicago jano11 05-15-2009, 03:22 PM Well I'll give it a go, it will make our friend Cheesey happy for sure. Can anyone post a few good picture of these rims together with the sizes of the tires that should fit on them (I suppose it's about the Fujimi kit tires?!). Are they different size front and rear? Cheesey153 05-15-2009, 03:27 PM Jano, I'll pm you soon....I have plenty of images. The rims are 14 inch x 7.5 inches, 1 inch wider than the stock Dino rims - same size, front & rear. I have no idea whatsoever if there are any tyres available that would fit, and would look 'period' enough. Jon. jano11 05-16-2009, 06:21 AM I took a look to my Fujimi kit and inner diameter of the tires is approx. 16 mm which is very close to what is needed for the 14'' rims. jano11 05-16-2009, 05:31 PM So, here's a preview of the model: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2405/3537175676_67aee832d4_o.jpg I'll need to know if you will use the same wheel hubs as in the Fujimi kit in order to make the wheel fit like the original Fujimi wheel. Also I need to know if you want the cap that goes on the middle of the wheel and the bolts to be one piece with the wheel. Otherwise I do not add them and you can use aftermarket metal bolts if you wish. Just let me know, what you think that needs to be changed. Cheers, Ioan Cheesey153 05-16-2009, 07:26 PM That is sensational! Would it be possible to add the two areas I've marked in red in the photograph below? Also, I notice you've modelled the small holes between each wheel nut hole - would it alos be possible to do the hole for the valve? Save me drilling it :) As for the hub/fitting question, I think without the cap would be better - then I could use a metal or styrene rod to push through the central hole, and into the Fujimi hub. If the rod is shaped to have a domed top it would nicely represent the wheel's central cap. Does that make sense? Is it a good idea? My model will be dispalyed with 2 wheels off of the car (to show the suspension etc) and will have the spare wheel displayed outside of the car too. So, I think holes instead of wheel nuts would be good - I would then only need to use aftermarket/scratch wheel nuts for the two wheels that will be displayed attached to the car. I'll send you phtographs of my work so far on the front suspension so you know what I mean. http://www.cheesey153.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/campag2.jpg This thread has taken an unexpected turn in an unexpected direction and it's left my seats in the shade somewhat! I hope to be able to post photos of one finished seat in the next couple of days but I suspect your wheels will make my seats look rather silly! :) I'm so amazed by what's happening - I really wanted to make a 'chairs & flares' Dino but I never expected I'd be able to. I am truly happy and grateful for your input! Jon. jano11 05-17-2009, 03:33 AM Hi Jon, Don't worry, the seats are great. In fact the quality of your work was what prompted me to help you out with the wheels. From the pictures you sent me it's obvious that you are doing an exceptional job on this model. Sure I will make the hole for the valve on the wheel, it's easy to do and will probably spare you time that you can use on other things. I'll also add the two areas with the Campagnolo and Dino writing (I'll see if I can add the text too, I'm not sure it will be possible to print it clearly given the small scale). I'll go see what are the sizes and the positions of the holes on the Fujimi hubs as I need to position the ones on the rims to the right place According to the hubs (I made the model based on the pictures of the real wheels). jano11 05-17-2009, 07:10 AM I'm thinking to make the wheels look like the real ones. In my opinion it is much more important to have the wheels look like the real deal than adapt them to the Fujimi Wheel hubs. Modifying the wheel hubs to fit the wheels is not very complicated and the work will be worth if the end result will be looking closer to the real wheels. GTV2000 05-17-2009, 09:02 AM I would like to express my keen interest in these wheels! I have been contemplating this same conversion to a chairs and flares dino since many years ago and only stopped because of the wheels! You might find this site interesting: http://www.dinorestoration.com/ Paul That restoration site points out the real weak point of the Dino 246, a steel block. The 206GT had an all alloy engine and body. Early 246GT's also had some alloy body panels(mid 1969 production). The power to weight ratio was better for the 206GT too. The 206GT looks better due to the shorter wheelbase(my opinion). The 206GT is also alot rarer( around 150 made). Only one 206GT raced, at Sebring in 1969 by NART. You can see by the production figures why they made so few Ferrari 206's and so many 246's. The FIAT Dino 2000 took most of the Ferrari production up to mid 1969 when the 246GT Dino started its production. The steel block FIAT Dino is very rare as most of the engine units went into the "Ferrari" Dino's after mid 1969. Lack of proper tools is a hindrance, but I didn't manage to find a file that is only 0.2-0.3 millimeters thick and the thinning and cleaning up work is going slowly. For now I'm at this stage: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3566/3602442413_659dccd8eb.jpg Once I'll have finished to thin the spokes down to a realistic size and clean it up properly I'll start casting it in resin. Paul pug=309 06-08-2009, 06:50 AM hey john. i was wandering when you were going to start the dino again ( i was following it on spc) great work on the seat by the way allan Cheesey153 06-16-2009, 01:02 AM Hi Allan, The Dino is my long-term project - I work on it for a few days, then put it away for a few weeks, work a few days, rest a few weeks. I'm finding it quite an intense project! During the 'rest periods' I try to develop my car modelling skills by (very slowly!) doing mostly out of the box builds, but trying new things on each one so I can apply them to the Dino. For instance, I'm currently working on Fujimi's Ferrari 512BB and I'm planning to make it my first model that will be displayed with the engine visible...so I'll be trying to add detail to the engine and learn lessons for when I do the Dino's engine. The thread on SPC seemed to die a death (not enough interest maybe??) but perhaps I should resurect it one day. In the meantime, here are a couple of photos showing what I've done to the inside of the front bonnet - it will be displayed open so I thought I'd better improve the kit piece. Thinning the plastic was nerve-wracking but I feel the result is worth all the anxiety I suffered! :) http://cheesey153.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/dino_74.jpg http://cheesey153.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/dino_76.jpg As for the seats, I'd like to get castings of them if only for my own use on another project, another day. If I'm successful in getting them cast in resin (either by myself or by someone else) I'll let you all know. Cheesey153 08-11-2009, 07:09 AM Time for an update: Personal circumstances have kept me away from my modelling bench for several weeks, so I have not been able to complete the seats yet. However, I'm now back on the job.... Earlier today the postman delivered a small cardboard package to my home. Inside were a number of resin castings of the Campagnolo wheels! jano11 has done a brilliant job on these little beauties! The level of detail is superb, the castings are devoid of any pin holes/air bubbles and there is only minimal flash to be removed from around the wheels' piercings - a very simple and quick job. The wheels are cast to the correct width of the Campagnolos, leaving the modeller the option of either adding a tyre wider than the Fujimi kit tyre, or reducing the Campagnolos' width to fit the kit tyre. Quite simply, these little gems look like Dino Campagnolos - and you can't complain about that, eh? I will clean one of them and put some paint on as soon as time allows, and then post a photo here. Thanks again jano11, you've made me very happy! Jon. jano11 08-11-2009, 07:55 AM Hi Jon, I'm glad you like the wheels! It was a pleasure to make them and I'm glad it helps you. :) Cheesey153 08-11-2009, 07:26 PM Well, here's one of jano11's castings painted! Grey primer and Alclad Aluminium. It's not a brilliant photo but I was keen to get an image posted here as soon as possible. I think the wheel will look even better with a slight wash of oil paint to accentuate the detail and i'll try to get a better photo when conditions allow. Enlarged photographioc images can be rather brutal but please let me assure you that this wheel looks absolutely superb to the naked eye, and is everything I dared hope it would be. The 'chairs & flares' Dino is now a realistic option in 1/24. If any of you don't like the fact that the wheel is lacking the central hub cap and has the wheel nut and other holes (including valve hole) cast open, please blame me - jano11 designed the wheel exactly as I asked, to suit my specific requirement. I figure it will be an easy task to add any neccessary detail with styrene or whatever. All people who have ever wanted Dino Campagnolos owe a huge debt of gratitude to jano11! The campagnolos on Dinos didn't have the Dino logo on the cetnre cap, they had a very subtle 'Campagnolo' script - so subtle, in fact, that it probably wouldn't show in 1/24. On my kit I plan to represent them with a slice of styrene, domed and then painted a slightly diiferent shade of silver than the wheels themselves. Now.... how can we buy a set of each? I'm questioning the worth of making two separate and slightly different seats. In truth, I'm getting a bit hacked off making the second seat! Do people here think a pair of castings of the seat I've completed (and shown a few postings ago) would be OK? Or is there any real benefit in having a pair of seats where the driver's & passenger's are subtly different? If an identical pair is good enough for everyone, I'm ready to get them cast now. I guess they would then be available ot anyone who wanted them. Feedback would be appreciated. Thanks, Jon. That is true, but the Dino logos would still look nice on the models wheels. Why dont you cast the seat and modify it, then recast. Tom Tanner/Scale Designs/Ferrari Expo 2010 model/photo contest-Chicago April 2010 PJE48 08-12-2009, 12:39 AM I will be happy with whatever you decide Jon concerning the seats! I do think that Tom has the right idea though. I certainly am looking forward to doing my own Dino with the "chairs and flares" option by you putting this "into production" for us.:) Paul Erlendson jano11 08-12-2009, 03:16 AM Hi Jon, That was a very fast job! Thanks for showing us what these babies look when painted. :) BVC500 08-12-2009, 09:59 AM yeah, I'm happy with the identical seats. count me in for a few sets! nniemi 08-12-2009, 01:15 PM Great work from both of you. Please don't forget me when you are casting the wheels and seats. For those of you who are building the '72 LM Dino, i might have some helpful photos. Nothing from the interior, but exterior is quite well covered. -Niko tuned.by.twenty 08-13-2009, 03:53 PM I'm questioning the worth of making two separate and slightly different seats. In truth, I'm getting a bit hacked off making the second seat! Do people here think a pair of castings of the seat I've completed (and shown a few postings ago) would be OK? Or is there any real benefit in having a pair of seats where the driver's & passenger's are subtly different? I can't say I would have a use for them at the moment, but I don't think it'd be too much of a crisis. Sorry if you've already stated it, but what is the difference? Cheesey153 08-13-2009, 05:10 PM Sorry if you've already stated it, but what is the difference? These Ferrari seats had a common frame with a replaceable insert - standard or 'Daytona'. The inserts are kind of loose, and photos show that they get squashed and squished, and that they move around slightly within the seat frame - the driver's side usually more so than the passenger side, presumably because of the increased usage on that side. I very much like detail, realism and subtlty but I wonder if I'm going unneccessarily far with this. I doubt the subtle difference between the seats would be noticeable. Of course, if a model is built to depict a new car, the seats should not be at all squashed & squished! By the way, Hobby Design has just done a photoetch set for the Dino 246. Don't buy the Hiro/Ejay T-kit. Buy the H.D. set. Its even better. Who needs metal parts anyway?? They are just the kit parts recast. Not worth the money. The H.D. set has exhaust tips machined also. I am hopeless at resin casting but a very kind fellow AF member offered to cast the seats for me. I eventually got the master posted to him and today I received a packet containing enough resin catings for my own personal use. They look great, I think he's done a very good job for me. The little perforations in the seat insert need a quick poke with a small drill bit, but that is a very quick & simple job. Other than that the seats look 100% to me! I won't say who this person is but if he wants to post in this thread he can identify himself. I have told him that if he wants to sell castings to other AF members he can do so. I'll leave it to him to come here and say if he will sell castings, how much they would cost etc.... Jon. http://cheesey153.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/resinseats.jpg BVC500 09-30-2009, 09:24 AM That would be great! I'll buy a pair if available from the caster. Thanks! Phil, PM'ed you a couple days ago - did you get it? tuned.by.twenty 10-01-2009, 11:03 PM Ooooh...Very nice! Cheesey153 10-01-2009, 11:11 PM As an extra to this thread, may I ask a question to you all? I am nowhere near as experienced, dedicated or knowledgeable about this hobby as most people on this forum and I'm pretty much in the dark about the aftermarket parts industry. I made the seat simply because I wanted one for my Dino build and it was only after I posted here that I realised some other modellers also wanted the same thing. So, my question is this: what sort of demand is there for extras such as seats, or other odd things? I enjoy making things from scratch and I'm wondering if there are there are other things I could contribute.... Jon. tuned.by.twenty 10-01-2009, 11:49 PM There's always a demand, it just depends on the part, and what people are into building at the current time. I know from personal experience that some parts can sell only a few pieces, while others will sell like crazy, and furthermore some can become very popular and very unpopular in waves. It also boils down to the quality of the finished product, and how user-friendly they are. Cheesey153 10-01-2009, 11:59 PM Well yes, I know all that from my involvement in other hobbies. carl63_99 10-02-2009, 09:07 AM Jon, If you build it, they will come. Everyone is always wanting to add to their models, be it kitbashing, scratchbuilding or getting things like these seats. So many modelers want to be able to add the exact part to make their model just what they want it to be, that I would say any component that you come up with if done as well as these seats is going to sell. The only hard part is getting connected with the people who would want such stuff, and Automotive Forums is a good first step. Good Luck! Carl BVC500 10-02-2009, 09:39 AM I would also say that it helps to identify a car kit that is egregiously lacking a particular, important detail that most modelers wished was there. For example, the Fujimi 355 that doesn't have proper door panels (nniemi made some excellent ones and sold them for a short time) or an airbag-style steering wheel (notably, early euro berlinettas had the non-airbag wheel, but most spiders, including the euro cars, had the airbag wheel). Another example might be the Tamiya BMW Z3, which has awful kit wheels, and lacks the traditional five spoke wheels. 360spider 10-02-2009, 09:52 AM As an extra to this thread, may I ask a question to you all? Input and advice like that you've given is invaluable. Thanks again. 360spider: If you (or anyone else) can make suggestions, please do! I must say though, my skills (such as they are) are more aligned towards sculpting, rather than machining. Unfortunately, I think wheels would be beyond me. Cheers, Jon. jano11 10-02-2009, 12:34 PM Did the wheels ever materialize? I really want a set of those. Nic Wheels will be available next Monday. BVC500 10-02-2009, 01:49 PM Cool, thanks for pointing that out. Well, I've been meaning to build a Dino (in Dino blue no less), and I'll wait for Daytona seats, should you improve them! F1Tommy 10-04-2009, 04:11 PM Well, I ran into a real chairs and flares Dino 246 GTS today at the Lake Forest Sportscars open house near Chicago. As soon as he posted a message that the seats are available, I sent him a PM asking whether he had two sets in stock, and how much it will be. After 3 days of silence, I got the following message: Hello, I have indeed casted the Dino seats made by Cheesey153. If you want to order the seats, please send your message directly to my e-mail address : *** stating your complete postal address. The price for one set is 16 USD shipping included and 25 USD for 2 sets. Once payment with Paypal is received the seats will be sent. Payapl address : **** (ph.maelcamp@belgacom.net) Thanks to let me know. Phil (philmodelcar) To which I responded with a PM: Excellent! I'll forward the funds via Paypal for 2 sets shortly. Thanks Phil. Alex Once the payment was sent, I PM him again: payment has been sent. Alex Then I got a very rude response that follows? Why can't people just follow instructions... please send me your address ONLY BY E-MAIL if you want me to ship it ! thanks I felt not only insulted by this manner, but a bit puzzled as to what caused him to write such an irritated response. So I PMed him again: What's up Phil? Just having a bad day or had too much coffee? If you want people to buy stuff from you, how about you be more professional with your customers? What you wrote was absolutely uncalled for. I for one don't have time to write useless emails with my address when it is included with Paypal payment. This is what its for - look it up. Alex Only to get another insult today via email: keep your money, please. it's easier for me. I'm not a business partner, I have done this not to earn any money but to satisfy a few fellows and if you have no time to waset writting e-mails, I have no time to waste with you. Now, you should know that on the e-mail received from Paypal, there is NONE delivery address. Secondly the message I had sent to the e-mail address written in the Paypal message failed to deliver because of exceeded mailbox.... Adios. My payment has been refunded. While I agree that did not send an email with my address, it was included with the payment. My schedule is such that I simply forget things like that. Seller attitude was absolutely rude, and uncalled for. Make your own conclusions. jla 10-07-2009, 03:47 PM Wow that really sucks... I guess we'll just have to wait and see how he responds to the post, but I'm guessing I won't be getting these seats anytime soon... Modelstate 10-07-2009, 05:11 PM Wauw that is surprising since I too use Paypal allot and as I recall the shipping address is always included :frown: Oh whell. Could I get a quote on the 20 inch Hamann's (2 set's of 4 rims), The seats are $ 16 if I am correct. Keep me updated for the Hamann body parts please. I may have over seen something about the Dino rims but if someone made them I would like a quote on those too. There so many good things on this forum that it just amazes me. Many thanks, Arno. Philmodelcar 10-09-2009, 05:09 AM Hello, I will not add any comments to 360spider 's reply. It's not worth it. I will just say that I have had excellent communication with all the other people who ordered the parts from me but unfortunately there is always in the lot an exception. All satisfied members will probably agree and others don't... that's life :-) jano11 10-11-2009, 10:49 AM Everything was all honey and milk 4 days ago when I left for a short holiday and now I find war around here. :( Come on guys, let's not upset each other. :) PJE48 10-14-2009, 12:47 AM I just received my wheels and seats today.
